Rear end oil - Milky ?

Scott, I do remember you saying that you rebuilt the rear end a couple of years ago. Could be one of the seals have gone bad early and allowing water to get in some where? Just a thought.

As for changing the rear end oil everytime you change the motor is just nuts.... I changed mine when I change all the other fluids in the bike

not when I change the motor oil and filter.

I'm with all y'all, probably way overkill but I change mine every oil change as well. $2 per change using Mobil-1 isn't much in the grand scheme of things.

You can usually get 5 changes out of one quart of Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Oil and a quart bottle costs about $10-$12 USD at a typical U.S. auto parts store....hence $2 is on the slightly optimistic side, but fairly realistic price estimation. Maybe $2.50 is closer.

Maybe a 71 km trip is worth is to you to stock up.

I live here. But now that I know it's socially acceptable here NOT to use Yamalube in the shaft drive, I can certainly spare the $3.27 it would cost for Mobil 1 from The Best Store in the World ) . In all seriousness, if I do not know what ingredients constitute adequate mfg requirements in an oil, I just pay the extra and buy the mfg recommended which, in my owner's manual ( unlike the engine oil ) states it must be Yamalube shaft oil. But if Mobil 1 synth is acceptable by this group, that's good enough for me!

I think most people here do use that mobil !, overkill maybe but hey it will never fail because my oil was bad........

I put fresh Yama juice in every fall before I put it away and run it for the season, never had a problem before.

I had a 65 Chrysler Newport in college that had a bad rear crank seal. My uncle would give me his used motor oil and I would top it off everywhere I went. A quart to go to the beach. Half a quart to the mall. I kept 3 gallons in the trunk.

I was just kicking him in the shin because I'm still sore he beat me at my first rally five years ago. :angry2:

 

But ya know he did say he did a short ride and I know it was cold down there Sunday. My bikes sweat up a storm with these warm then cold days and my wife won't let me take them in the house so they stay in the unheated garage. I'll work on her again and let her know what happens to cold FJR's. :lol:

Iggy summed it up. I watch my local O'Reillys for sales and pick up Mobil-1 synthetic for $10 - $11 a quart.

Next time you're south of the border, stock up!

I just go to my nearest Walmart and buy their finest SuperTech GL-5 gear oil....I think I paid $3.70 the last time I bought a quart....and I change the gear oil every 16K whether it needs it or not.

Drip is not the right word. It was a 383 though.
