Rear shock woes

So I bought a rear shock from one of our members (good seller btw) thinking I could send it off for a new spring and rebuild. Meanwhile I can ride my bike with the original and limit down time. Well I had planed on sending it to this Sasquatch guy you people talk about but it seems he has gone outa business. Now WTF am I gonna do....anyone else rebuilding and revalving the stocker? Are there any options beside the aftermarket? TIA

Sorry....it is a stock shock off an 06.

Okay, gotcha. Sasquatch used to rebuild those before went to jail for some salacious offense like child molestation. Not too cool, and I don't know of anyone stepping in. Keep an eye out for a used rebuildable shock or get in on the Fall group buy next year. I got a nice used Penski last Fall off another member.

How many miles on your bike and the used shock?

There is another outfit rebuilding the stock shock, IIRC in Minnesota. Might take some searching and digging but there is a thread somewhere...

How many miles on your bike and the used shock?

Mine has 29xxx and the used one has 16xxx. Not sure if a used after market is any cheaper than new....after you purchase it you still may need to spring and service it before installing it.

Jeff is a great guy to work with. He rebuilt my '05 rear shock using RaceTech parts, you may or may not need a new spring depending on its condition but make sure you discuss it with him.

He's been doing my major maintenance work for years & is one of the most honest mechanics I've ever known, plus his work is top notch. Can't remember what I ended up paying but I think it was

a little cheaper than Sasquatch but then I didn't have the spring replaced. Great shop!

29K miles and your stocker is toast?

I know lots of guys who have had similar longevity, but what the hell are you guys doing to your shocks?

I ask because my stock rear had 70K+ on it and was still "OK" but I got a screaming deal on a Wilburs off another forum member. Yeah, there is a 'difference' between it and the stocker, but hell if I can really qualify beyond 'different.'

I must have THE world's worst butt-dyno, ya know?

I doubt VERY MUCH your stock shock was OK at 70+K miles.

If you rebuild the gen II shock get it re-sprung. I put a newish gen II shock on my gen I bike (the gen I shock is hopelessly under-sprung) and it worked OK at the hard setting with only me, 183lbs, on the bike. If I added luggage the shock was back to under-sprung. I eventually gave up and went with an Ohlins.

75k on my FJR Gen II shock and it is at least OK, maybe a touch better (for me), solo touring 85mph and under.

I have had Ohlins on my VFRs and BMW K bike, and currently have a Penske 8983 on my FZ-1, so I understand what good suspension is. I think, if you just don't stress the stock Gen II shock a lot, it works pretty well for a long time.

Yeah, most of these "stock" shocks are about done by 25,000 miles.

My stock shock is still doing quite well at 30,000 mi. I weigh 150 and never overload the bike. Only had a passenger on it once. I'm sure it's lost a little from when it was new, but for my riding style I think it will go a few more miles.

Weight IS a factor, and how hard you ride...you're much lighter than most people over 40 and I bet the average age of a FJR rider is about 50 or so.

I replaced my stock with Race Tech last year. I believe and stand to be corrected but the stock shocks rebuild ability depends on the material the body is made of? At least I think that's the reason? I had my forks done by a local technician Ian Mckill and it was his opinion that I was better off getting the Race Tech G3 shock rather than even trying to rebuild my stock one! Expensive yes but with over 80,000 kms on the bike it deserves the new parts.
