'We made a weak part, you guys out there are over-tightening the unit, but we're such good guys that we're going to fix it'; what a crock. IMO
totally tru dat....they only copped to it 'cause the got their nutz in a vise. as long as I've know anything about BMW customer service they suck ***.I'd ride an old Yammie Midnight Special before I got any BMW....

 
BMW dealer: Sir, your engine failure is not covered by the warranty. You've got the original oil from the factory, or rather about a half a quart of it.

BMW owner: But you've covered improper maintenance before! I need a new, more robust engine. NOW!

I wonder what percentage of the failures that precipitated this recall (call it what you will) were preceded by "improper maintenance" in bikes where the maintenance was performed by owners as compared to the trained technicians at the dealer.

 
I don't think Yamaha waited until now to finally fix the tickers. If this was a known issue since 2003 what the bajeepers did they wait for, 2015 common? Yes we have had are issues with the bikes but they sure were fixed in a more timely manner.

LMAO, sounds just like this old duffer (ex CC farmer) who flys this old crop duster around our area, his famous words "ya could never get me into one of those Leer jet contraptions, and they break down all the time, and, it's big bucks to fix!"... "nope, just not fer me!".

Actually,my point was that BMW customer service sucks-not the bike... i.e. when the first EFI twins surged badly the problem was that "you're not riding it right".. Just one of many examples.

I agree, but who has great CS in this industry? Certainly not Yamaha either. They listen to nothing, zero, nada.

Oh well, as long as everyone is happy. And if you're not?, you can always jump ship I guess.

True Story Lonerider, I still have that letter! There were a number of aftermarket fixes, but it only occurred between 40-60mph on my 1996 R1100GS: Ignored!

 
Yup! Yamaha has terrible customer service for footing the entire bill for fixing my ticker when it was already out of warranty. *******s!!

Sorry KJ but you missed this one. Yamaha not only stepped up to fix the tickers but they put a new head on my 04 in one day at no charge to me. I was the second owner of the 04 too. BMW just suck dude, you might as well ride a Hardley Ableson. Bawahaha!

 
I have to step up to help KJ out here, even though I don't want to.

The recall BMW did on the 2014 R1200RT was unprecedented. BMW went way above and beyond anything I ever heard of with the options they offered their customers. I was very impressed.

On the other hand I have to disagree with KJ with regards to Yamaha not listening. The fact that the continual refinements to the FJR have been exactly what we all asked for tells me that Yamaha is listening. I can't say much about the Yamaha warranty because I have not had much go wrong that was not my fault.

 
I just rec'd an email from BMW, but it stated my K1600 model was not included.

Here is the exact email/text that went out. I totally can't find anything wrong with it, again, cudos to them for festing-up and recalling nearly 300K bikes. BTW- My Cadillac CTS-V has had about 5 recalls since I owned it. And... I'm still a fan of that too!

Big time BMW happy here!

As part of a technical campaign involving motorcycles of the R and K Series produced between 11.2003 and 04.2011, BMW Motorrad will replace the wheel flange of the rear suspension as a precaution. BMW Motorrad is informing all owners of the motorcycles affected. For customers the technical campaign is free of charge. Based on our ongoing quality analyses, it was found that in the case of incorrectly carried-out maintenance work, excessive torque may be applied to the brake disk bolts or to the nuts when changing wheels, contrary to the values specified in the BMW Motorrad repair instructions or operating instructions. Cracks and damage can occur in the wheel flange as a result of excessive torques. BMW Motorrad has therefore decided to exchange the wheel flange with a more robust part as a precaution.'

I guess I am just a negative person but I am still reading, "It's not that we didn't build it right, it's because you are using it wrong but since we are such nice guys we are going to fix it. We don't mean "fix it" because it is not actually broken..."

It would be too much to expect any company to admit a mistake I guess.
