My poor ZX-14 'bro's..... I would be very unhappy if this had happened to me.....

You all might recall I've posted before on the staggering frame separations some of the 2006/2007 ZX-14 guys have suffered:

Well...... it finally took them long enough, but Kawasaki has finally issued a Recall on all '06/'07 frames to check for an overtightened condition that (allegedly) leads to complete frame failure (separation of cross-members) you see in the above photos:

Holy fookin' ****, few appreciate what is involved in a frame swap..... it's a heinous amount of work, and gives pimply-faced dealership service monkeys a MASSIVE opportunity to further **** up you bike during the process..... :glare:

A bad deal all around.... bad for Kawi.... bad for ZX-14 owners..... just All Bad!

I wonder if this will end up splashing over to the C14 guys... I think the frames are very similiar.

Took 'em long enough. Too bad the frame didn't just tick, they could have stalled 'em forever.

Engine mount over-torque, my ***. Somewhere, a japanese engineer is having his head removed as we speak.

"...it appears that some damage was done." - Hirohito - upon his visit to Hiroshima after the war.

"Frame replacement may take a few weeks" ??? - they would be lucky to get it back in 3 months.

Just to sorta kinda set the world straight....

To date, there's been only 1 known breakage. There has been 3 found with a crack.

Very very very small % of 2006-07 bikes are being recalled.

All frames were fine. Engineering fine.

Over-torquing the rear tension bolts (tightens the collar) is the culprit. Assembly guy's head was removed.

That is all.

PS: Hayabusas (all models, all years) have been just recalled. There seems to be a loose nut behind the clip-ons. :yahoo:

One might think you have little faith in pimply-faced dealership service monkeys.

Nope, he has complete faith in them to **** something up.

Puts me in mind of the 2003/4 Wing recall for a potential defective frame weld. I saw one of those at HSB and the result of an at speed failure. Not pretty. Glad to see Kawasaki stepping up - at last.

Anyone know a good/reputable forum for goldwings to browse maintenance items?

A friend of mine performed the welding repairs for Honda in these parts. The dealership would do the tear-down of the bike, load it on a trailer, and bring it to him for welding. I thought the line would never end. He welded more than a few.

Oh, c'mon, now..... NHTSA is not going to issue a recall if there was only a single incident of breakage.

There were five confirmed instances of frame cracks (across two model years) before NHTSA ODI (Office of Defects Investigations) even issued the preliminary investigation (PE 08-021) to Kawasaki USA, this was late last March.

The recall can affect up to an estimated 11,000 ZX-14s, according to the ODI resume...... and plenty of threads in Bikeland, zx14ninja.com, ST.N, etc, on folks who took their bike in and were told their collars were overtorqued......
