At the end of this month (july) I am leaving AZ en route to Steamboat Springs. I am planning on entering CO near Durango and will head north from there. I haven't been through SW CO before and would appreciate any route recommendations. Right now I am planning on heading towards Salida from Durango and then directly north to Steamboat from there.

On the way back I am planning on visiting Grand Junction for a day, and then heading back down towards Durango.

Any very scenic and/or curvey roads in that area that I need to include in this trip?

When you get to South Fork take 149 to Creede, Lake City and then to Gunnison. Then 50 to Salida. You will NOT regret it. JB

When your in Gunnison take a little time to go North to Mt. Crested Butte. It is a great place and my favorite town in Colorado ( I have a home there)

then follow 50 to Salida over Monarch pass.

When your in the north trail ridge road through Rocky Mountain National Park to Estes Park then 7 to the peak to peak.

Damn man the possibilities are endless.

Pm me and I'll ride with you

Don't let it drive you nuts Exskibum

Hop on one of your bikes and come on out.

As you know there are so many roads here in Co you could spend a lifetime riding them.

I am.

Come out this Winter and we can ski too!
Hmmmm. We may have to swap lodging opportunities both seasons. Next winter, I'll have a season pass at Kirkwood (Heavenly Valley last year, Sugar Bowl before that, mostly Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows before that and two at Steamboat). Best snow and terrain out here is really at Squaw, Kirkwood and Alpine.

As to riding, we are truly blessed here in the Sierras, as well. So . . . after I get moved to Gardnerville this fall (just down the hill from South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly), maybe we should talk about showing one another the winter and summer goodies of our locales.

I just got back from CO after riding around for about a week. My favorite road is Highway 92 between Sapinero and Hotchkiss. 550 from Durango to Ouray is also top notch.

Now I am getting really excited about this trip. I am quite confident it will be awesome.

I quite agree with you exskibum about the riding in the Sierra Nevadas, especially in and around the lake. I was there last Labor Day and it was very nice. Four wheeled part of the Rubicon Trail and mountain biked the Flume Trail. One of the best times I have had. I would love to go back this summer with my FJR, but I can't haul my bikes and kayak on it. I might just need to get a motorcycle trailer for my truck and haul everything there.

it's all about where I grew up. I lived at the Eastern end of CO Hwy 7. This is commonly called Morrison Road and it ends at Wadsworth in Lakewood on the East side. On the West side, it ends in the Mount Evans Wilderness somewhere (not sure I've been all the way to the end before). Anyway, it is one of the best maintained mountain canyon roads in Colorado and it has every kind of curve you never imagined. It follow Bear Creek up the canyon and goes by Red Rocks park and a few really nice little towns (Idledale is where my brother now lives).
