Sometimes I love our Montana redneck sensibility. Way to go Montana Legislature and Gov. Brian Schweitzer!

Schweitzer signs bill to ban red-light cameras

By CHARLES S. JOHNSON

Gazette State Bureau

HELENA - Gov. Brian Schweitzer signed a host of bills into law Tuesday, including one that forbids local governments from using automatic cameras at traffic lights to catch drivers who run red lights.

House Bill 531, by Rep. Bill Nooney, R-Missoula, will put a stop to plans by Bozeman and Billings to install the cameras or what the bill called an "automated enforcement system."

Schweitzer said he signed HB531 "probably for the same reason I was against the Patriot Act and Real ID."

"Government will always look for the easy way to monitor her citizens," Schweitzer said. "I think the citizens deserve some personal liberties, and I agree with the Legislature. I don't think Montanans want a bunch of cameras looking at them."

Glad to hear that since my last trip thru Montana was tripple didget touring B)

Gald to see there is a state out there that can not follow all the others. :clapping: I hope that something like that can pass in my state too. We don't need no stinkin' revenue generatin' traffic safety cameras.

Went through an automatic speed enforcement setup a couple of weeks ago. I didn't notice until I saw the flash. Then I laughed when I realized it only took a picture of the front of my bike. No license plate!

Certainly no one likes those who ignore red lights; string 'em up from a tall tree with a short rope. But what we want is human enforcement, not machines. And clearly this will ban the automatic photographic speed traps, too, which surely would be next. I think most of us here in the Big Sky just aren't comfortable with our behaviors being secretly monitored and recorded by "The Man." Fact is, we just don't trust the guvmint all that much.

And as far as Motorcycle go it's a good thing. I often have to run a red light when it doesn't change for two or three cycles because the bikes don't trigger the magnets to change the signal.

The last time I was up there it was still a "reasonable and prudent" speed limit when you were out of town. That was an interesting concept that I wished would have made it to Texas.

Biggest problem with the corner Kodak is you have to pay the fine if you run a light to avoid being run over OR you get run over to avoid paying the fines.
