Right is Harder than Wrong.
Hey to all you FJR rollers,
My Brother has a 06 A that we just installed(no problems) the Hexacones on with the baffles in. My 07 A has the baffles out. It should be noted that the baffles don't appear to be very restrictive. Noise wise between them in or out isn't as much of a difference as you would think. The actual noise level (how loud) doesn't change all that much BUT with the baffles in the bike sounds a lot more crisp or pitchy and not as much resonating on decel. With them out the bike sounds more throaty with a bit more resonation. Witnesses to our noise demo(group of car mechanics that work for my Brother) actually liked the sound with the baffles in.. Personal preference is key here. I like the sound better too with baffles in.
Well, we did a endless amount of different gear roll-ons to see how the bikes compare side by side (the 06 baffles in and the 07 baffles out).
It should be noted that my 07 has about 6000mi and my Brothers 06 has 600mi(yes he doesn't ride enough). We bought them both at the same time this past May(his was a hold over). My 07 had about 3/4 tank of gas and my Brothers had about a 1/4 tank full. However, I weigh about 215 and my brother is about 225.. So I was guessing that the weight was pretty even between both rides. How much does a half a tank of gas weigh??
Here is how it stacked up:
1st gear(around 5 grand)..... Way too Even.. too close to call........
2nd gear(around 5 grand).... Way too Even.. too close to call........
3rd gear(around 5 grand).... Even.... though right before red line the 07(baffles out) pulls ahead a wee bit prior to shifting.
4th gear(around 5 grand).... The 06(baffles in)pulls ahead about 3/4 a bike length initially but the 07(baffles out) reals it in near red line.
5th gear(around 5 grand)..... The 06(baffles in)impressively pulls ahead about 1 1/2 bike lengths initially and then the 07(baffles out)starts to pace and
slowly reels it in and passes(a slow pass) it sometime around 8 grand heading for warp speed.
5th gear(around 4 grand)..... The 06(baffles in)very impressively walks away about 2 1/2 good bike lengths before the 07(baffles out) starts to pace it and,
again, begins to reel it in and passes(not as slow of a pass this time) it after 8 grand hitting warp speed.
Interestingly enough.. My Brother was saying that after the 07(baffles out) would pass him in 4th or 5th it would seem to only get a head a bike length or two and then the 06(baffles in)would seem to pace its clip. But we did not attempt any top end speed runs.
We both agreed that with baffles out the FJR seem to have a better top end(More HP on top) BUT was this due to the baffles or because my Brothers 06 isn't broke in yet? Though with the baffles in better low end(more low end torque).
We were very careful not to try and get jumps on each other and be very fair because we truly were trying to decide which way to run um(baffles in or out).
Though, we both agree that we like the look of the pipes with the baffles out better.
One other tid bit...My Brother owns his own Automotive business(a lot of tools and mechanics ect ect ect). Well right after we parked he grabbed his infrared heat tester and checked temps of the header on all four cylinders on both bikes. The 07 with the baffles out had a significantly cooler header temp on all 4 cylinders.... like 35 degrees cooler. Remember both bikes just finished competing side by side. Obviously with the baffles out, it was more free flowing BUT maybe TOO much with no power commander? Also we were speculating that the more heat (I know heat is bad) may have been from more torque/Hp building quicker if indeed the 06 was weaker on top because of not being totally broke in yet.?.?.?
One other heat check..He tested our rear pumpkins(in the same spot)...His 06 still has the factory gear lube, my 07 has Lucas full synthetic gear lube...Drum roll please,..,,.,.,.,.,.,., mine with the full synthetic gear lube was 10 degrees cooler than his.
Those of you with the Hexacones which way do you run um? What I am contemplating is this... I know my Brothers motor isn't even broke in yet so that could easily describe my 07 having the advantage on top...and maybe .. the better performance set up for the FJR with the hexacones is to have the baffles in????
