Renew AMA?

I got a pitch in the mail last year to support my fellow riders by joining the American Motorcycle Association. So why not?

Now, a year later, I wonder if there's anything at all to that organization. Did I miss something this year? Seems nothing happened that had anything to do with me or my fellow riders.

Anyone know a good reason to renew my membership?

I keep mine for the hotel discounts. Every little bit helps out. Not sure of all of the other uses yet, but that's the main one.

Your renewal helps with the AMA's fight to keep all the various levels of government respecting our rights to ride. I urge you to renew for that reason. Legislative support by the AMA has saved many off road riding areas from being closed. They work hard to fight bike bans sought by municipalities. Work hard for safety studies to make our sport/passion better for all of us.

I'm not a member, so I probably am the wrong guy to defend keeping a membership... but isn't AMA a primary lobbying body to try to keep federal or state regulations from strangling us with restrictions on where we can ride, lane splitting and such?

edit: I see post #3 was faster than me, and hits the same idea. Maybe I ought to join too.

Yup, that's why I'm in there. I'm not too pleased with the recent racing fiasco though. If Dayona Motorsports Group ***** things up as royally as it seems they might, then I'm outta there. I'll wait to see what their new rule structure actually turns out to be, and give them a chance until them.

I'm a member because of the stuff the AMA does to protect the rights of the Motorcyclist...

Plus Vintage Days at Mid-Ohio race track is an interesting event to visit...

Same thing with the NRA ,, to protect the rights of the shooter...

I keep an AMA membership, to support their efforts in fighting discrimination against motorcyclists. Recently, a lady was ticketed for riding her bike (legally) in an HOV lane. The case went on forever, and AMA helped her to win. They are also fighting the health insurers who want to deny benefits to policyholders who were riding a motorcycle when they got hurt. For examply, a drunk driver takes you out while you're legally and properly riding to work, and your health insurance refuses to pay. The driver's insurance pays HIS hospital bill without a question. Some homeowners' associations are trying to ban motorcycles on their properties. You can drive a jacked up monster truck, a slammed racermobile or a POS rustbucket but not a bike. AMA are also working to preserve legal off roading areas.

Since I'm not into politics (mods please note!!!) I am happy to pay my dues and let the AMA take care of these issues on my behalf.

+1 to what the other members said. I think they're the group fighting the best fight to protect our rights to ride. And that's the main reason I've maintained my membership.

The new president, Dingman, is also cleaning up a lot of things about the organization I didn't like. I'll spare us all the details, but it's easy to find as many people who hate the organization as like it, including on this board. I understand their complaints and agree with many of them. For the first time in the 10 years I've been a member, those things are being addressed. I feel better about supporting them now than I ever did.

Whoa...not sure you get the picture. DMG is buying the roadracing organization from the AMA. They're not just running it, they're buying it. Soup to nuts. When the transaction is complete, there will be no more AMA roadracing organization. They may keep the title AMA pro racing, but, it will be owned by DMG. If DMG ***** up, there is no reason to pin it on the AMA.

While you're renewing, you should look at MoTow if you don't have a good towing package with insurance or other.

Be sure to consider their life-long membership. After years and years of paying for AMA one year at a time, and just because I HAD to be a member to ride AMA motocross races, I finally wised up and bought a lifetime membership.

IMO they have one of the more competitive and nearly logical lifetime membership rates. Unlike the other AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) which has a lifetime rate that matches about 30 years annual!

The MoTow insurance is pretty cheap once you get the AMA membership behind you.

If you get to mid Ohio, you might want to head over to the AMA Hall of Fame in Pickering on the southeast side of Columbus. Its not as impressive a collection in terms of breadth as Barber's, but they do have a lot of neat stuff to look at. The annual induction ceremony is in October (IIRC). Some interesting guys make it a habit to attend. Last year it was oppressively hot, and Ohio's not a very interesting place to ride when you're used to the ridges on and off the Cumberland plateau and the Smokies, but its still fun. I should be supporting AMA, so I'm going to follow the good examples here and sign up too.
