I'm going to Vegas in August. The wife and I have been talking about renting a Harley to ride to the Grand Canyon while we're there. Is it too hot to ride from Vegas to The Grand Canyon in August?

I rented from the Vegas Eaglerider this past spring. Had a great experience with them. Screw the Harley though, they have ST1300s. No Fjrs but I figured the ST was next best.

Rented a VROD from Eaglerider a while back. As long as the humidity is low you'll be fine.

Yeah it will be, unless you leave vegas about 4am or earlier
Kingman Mark is right, get an early start out of Las Vegas and plan on riding back into LV after dark. Were you overnighting and which Rim (North or South) are you going to? With this slow economy, lots of travelers are not going overseas this year, buy going to US National Parks instead. If you are staying overnight, I recommend you get your room reservation before you leave Nevada.

It's 275 miles to the South Rim, 265 to the North Rim. About 120 miles to the West Rim (where the skywalk is) The west rim road is dirt for about the last 10 miles also it's Indian owned, prices are high $ 75 to walk on the skywalk, $43 without skywalk.

The north rim is my favorite. It's a cooler ride (temp wise) and you will go through some spectacular scenery on the way. There is less "stuff" (fewer tours, shops, restaurants, etc) but there is also usually less tourist traffic than on the south rim. There is a beautiful lodge right on the rim if you're planning on staying the night (be sure to make a reservation), and the view is just as amazing. The only thing you would be missing out on is the Hoover Dam, but you would be gaining Zion which is more than a fair trade in my opinion. If you really want to see the dam it's only a short hop south of Vegas, but there is almost always traffic so if you're planning on taking a tour or anything (meaning you will be there during business hours, meaning traffic will be extra nasty) be prepared to be really hot!!

Enjoy your trip!

Ok I rented a 2010 Electra Glide Classic from Eagleriders. We left Vegas at 10am and the temp reached 112 but dropped to about 85 or so near the Grand Canyon. We used cooling vests (the kind you pour water on) and they really helped. The heat really wasn't that bad. The next morning the weather at the canyon was perfect for a ride along the southern rim to the watchtower.

I rented the Harley so I could try one out. I won't be trading the FJR anytime soon for a Harley (as in never). That thing can barely get out of it's own way. It feels so underpowered to me. However I did like the stereo, cruise control and the seat was better than my stocker. Anyway I can't wait to get home to my bike, the whole ride I wished I was on it instead.

You should have rented a Wing or even a Beemer, they can find their way home :p
Yeah next time I'll try a Wing or a Beemer. I did the Harley this time because I figured a wing is much closer to the FJR so I thought I'd try something different. I'm glad I did because now I know I don't want to buy one, not meant as a Harley bash, it's just not my thing.
