I'm nearing the time to replace a rear tire because of wear. (I'm running Avons). The front tire has quite a bit of tread left. Is it necessary to replace both tires? Or, can you just replace the rear and replace the front later? Give me a link if this has been addressed before. TIA.

If you are replacing with the same brand/style tire, then just do the rear. I usually wear out two rears to one front.

If the new tire(s) is going to be different, then I would replace both.

I am currently running a used-up Avon on the rear and a new Pirelli up front, which recently replaced a used-up Pirelli. Next week, I'll change the rear to a Pirelli "E". I only change tires as they wear out or fail (not yet, by God's grace) unless it's on a car. Can't see any reason to change differently sized bike tires in pairs, or to stick with the same brand front and rear, other than to satisfy an OCD. YMMV

Do you ever buy (1) new shoe?

I can tell already that I am going to like this thread......."one new shoe"......I love it. You know....the world is going to end if you don't change both at the same time. And if they aren't the same brand, then the sky will fall.

It's okay. Tomorrow I'll remove my rear wheel and replace the worn-out Avon with a new Pirelli which will match the one up front and the balance of the universe will be restored, unless cpsfjr buys something other than an Avon for his rear tire.

Hey, the ecosystem is already out of whack, what with hurricane victims all over the place. We have to keep it insynk by having different tyres on front and back. Some people just don't understand fisiks.
