Just replaced my Laam with a Russell. YMMV. Let me know when your in town, if the planets line up, maybe get a beer.

Desert heat is BRUTAL if you are not used to it. We had 70 days over 100 degrees here in Redding last year. Make sure that you have a hydration system and use it. Also a good idea to carry a spare 1.5 liter, just in case. You might want to pick up a cooling vest in San Diego for the run to Denver. Agree with Bugnatr, 36 is a blast. If you want to ride the whole thing so you can get the photo op at Red Bluff, cool. If you want to local back route to Platina, PM me.

Keep an eye on those tires. I think most pull the OEM's as soon as they get the bike (I know I did) and I really don't have any idea how long they last.

I would also check for road closures along your "planned" route.

AFAIK, there is still a list of members, where they are located and what type of help they can give in a pinch. This is a group of the finest degenerates anywhere.

Congrats on the retirement, I am still looking at 10-15 years.

Sounds like an epic trip, can't wait to read the ride report.

John,

The Laam was no longer working for me. It felt to me like the foam failed, I could get about 4 hours until the pain right in my tailbone started. I just could not find a comfortable position any more. I had though about going back and having him rework the seat, but decided to go Russell instead (one of the benefits of living 10 miles from two great seat manufactures!). The cost was not all that much more for both seats and Russell has a pretty good track record. I needed to get Michelle off the stock seat as well, and didn't want to take a chance that we would need to redo both seats down the road.

Nothing against Seth and his product, but it was time to try something different.

I think that I will probably take the Russell in for an adjustment, but I am going to give it a few thousand miles to break it in properly. The only negative so far is due to my pathetic inseam of 29". I am back on the tips of my toes at stops. I fix this by stopping a little as possible . Michelle is thrilled with the results so far.

The Russell is getting it's first real workout on the Spearfish trip. I will let you know what I think when I see you. We can do a seat swap if you want

Gregory,

One tip that some short legged folks employ on Russell seats is to try sliding forward towards the tank when coming to a stop. The nose of the seat is considerably narrower and gives you a straight shot to the ground with those stubby legs.

Just teasing about the stubby legs. Although Im over 6 foot, my legs arent all that long either. I have to use the same slide forward technique when on my Russell equipped VStrom.

Thanks Fred, I actually already do this, some times to detriment of my boys when the stop is unexpected..........

My svelte *** is just a *tad* smaller than your flabby backside... you can try my R on for size if you like.

I bought it used.. and it fit so damn good no way I'm gonna try to 'fit' it and make it 'better' where the end result just might be -

'If only I could it get it back to where I first started, I'd be happy!'
