My New to Me 15---Known as Halle, has a problem with the Ring that surrounds the Gas Cap. That part is broken. I am struggling to find a proper replacement other than the stock one. I am okay with buying a new one of those, but because the the terms "gas cap" only have 3 letters Searching is not the easiest.

I tried "Fuel, replacement, cover, tank, and some others" But I wanted to know what options some of you have done.

I also think I am going with a GIVI tank lock bag, so I want that to be compatible. I don't want Halle's tank getting rubbed.

So help me with what you have done if you have replaced you gas tank cap. Thanks

I don't remember anybody replacing gas cap parts with anything but the stock parts....and those are rare.

Get on Amazon, eBay, and MC parts stores. Someone will have it. You may have to call your local dealer for a part number.

Josh - can you post a picture or pictures of exactly what is broken?

Did the PO have a "tank loc" style of tank bag? The adapter that comes with those look broken until you realize how it works.

Crap - I hope you don't have to replace the cap - you will need a separate key to re-fuel your bike.

Magnetic tank bags (and strap) spread the load across the top of the tank. Pain in the *** for fueling, but that quick-lock system always made me wonder about putting the load in a small area. (Speculation on my part as to why it broke). My tank bag gets pretty heavy sometimes, like when it's the last place to fit a fifth of cheap whiskey from duty free store coming home from CA....

Good luck with your fix.

Maybe if I have to go with a whole replacement, I should look at keyless.
I have not looked closely, but I would be surprised if you can't swap the lock cylinder from your original cap to a replacement cap.

I looked at the parts diagrams for fuel caps for various years and found that the part number has changed, but the gen 2 cap is listed as a replacement for the gen 1 cap, so you may be able to use whatever year cap you can find from someone parting out an FJR.

@Cav, keyless option from the2wheels if you choose to go that direction. No experience with the product other than I have several sets of their knock-off levers.

Many moons ago forum member Reno John converted his stock cap to a key-less replacement. His reasoning was related to running LD rallys where he wanted to make gas stops as quick as possible. ISTR that the main concern with the replacement is to get proper tank ventilation so you don't create a vacuum and implode the tank. That has happened before when the stock cap venting gets fouled up.

I did a write up (also many moons ago) about removing the vent check valve in the cap (to help prevent fuel geysers when the tanks heat up and pressurize) and that post shows the inside of the gas cap parts pretty well. It should be very easy to swap the lock cylinders.

Those are some good ideas.

I looked and looked, but could not find who it was that recently replaced their gas cap with a Keyless model. Searching did not help, do any of you remember where exactly it was?

Tech Question

Also, can the lock assembly be seperated from the ring? I do not want to have 2 keys for Halle, so I want to see if I can find a 2nd hand gas cap and put my lock assembly into the new/used ring.

Thanks in advance.

Check with Wayne, Extrememarine, on this forum. He parted out an FJR recently and may have a cap.

I considered this also.

The FJR cap assembly is common to several other Yamaha bikes. As I recall the FZ1 uses the same cap Assy. The easiest way to figure it out is to go to one of the online parts sellers and look up the FJR cap, then check the FZ1, also check the R1. You'll soon find one that is common.

Once you have the common sport bike model it is easy to look on an aftermarket suppliers website for a compatible keyless cap. I didn't save the links, just checked. Have fun searching.

I lied, found one I'd saved:

I haven't checked to see if the '15 FJR uses a different Cap than a '14

I wouldn't spend much to replace the gas cap I have, but if some oddball circumstance ever forced it on me, I'm pretty sure I'd go with one of those keyless caps. What's the risk, really? There are always valuable things that could be removed from an FJR for an enterprising thief, and plenty of vandalism that could be done if anybody really wanted to, but it doesn't seem like it's been a big issue has it? And if somebody stole some of your gas, what are you out? Not that I'd like it, but there are way worse things that could happen. What's in your tank bag? They don't lock. Even if they did, it's the simplest thing in the world to

with a ball point pen or something. Or slit a fabric bag. Or just steal the whole thing.
And with my 2 GenI's, I've had the gasoline geyser twice over several years. Don't even think the vent on my cap was faulty, since it was only those very isolated instances.
