I got my used '06 FJR with the center stand in a bag instead of on the bike. I'd much rather have it on the bike. I've seen a few posts from tyronewildman about removing/installing it on pre-'03 bikes that indicate you can do it by unbolting the mufflers and rear of the exhaust and move it out of the way enough to access the bolts without having to pull the exhaust entirely. Is this still the case on the '06?

Any other tips/tricks/gotchas I should be aware of (or better yet, good instructions for doing this)? The bike's got ~8k on it and I believe it's had the 6k service done already, how much trouble is the swingarm bearing check?

Thanks!

Are you sure you're talking about the swingarm?

Maybe you're talkin about the bearings in the steering head assembly.

I could be wrong but I don't think there are any bearings in the swingarm.

At any rate the steering head bearings should be all right unless they aren't torqued properly.

Maybe you're talking about the drive shaft needing to be lubed.

This is usually done at the first rear tire change. You just pull the four acorn nuts off and slide the whole drive shaft assembly out and you see the splines of the shaft on the end.

Typically these splines will be dry as a bone, use some honda molypast-60.

Also put some of the same lube on the splines where your rim connects to the drive shaft.

Yep, StickyC, Taking the center stand off my '04 was hard but putting the center stand back on is the easy part. U can use the same bolts & just put a flat washer next to the bolt head (to keep the bolt from hitting the pipes)& insert them from the inside so the nut is near the pipes. I also bought 2 thin nuts for this to insure plenty of space between the nuts/bolt and the pipes. Make sure that U do the final tightening with the weight of the bike on the center stand & use thread locker on the nuts. Taking the swing arm off is a pain & there is needle bearings in there but mine were lubed just fine with seals to keep the grease in. My advise is to just reinstall the center stand and leave everything else alone. In 5 or 6 years(if it's still bugging U) then take it apart & grease the swing arm & pivot bearings...Later,,, De

Thanks for the help - It turns out that when they removed the center stand, they just removed the main pivot bolts and not the brackets - I was able to remove the cans and header bolts next to the center stand mounts and push the headers aside just enough to push the troublesome right pivot bolt in (the left one goes into the hole from the inside, so there were no clearance issues there). Went much smoother than I feared it would. Now I've got a center stand again! (at least until my riding skills get to the point where I'm dragging it on corners and have to rip it out again - but that will take years and cost millions of lives...)
