I have the bike torn down for some maint and upgrades and needed to test something so I ran some wires from the battery which was on the floor and like a DA reversed to polarity. There was a "click" and the realization of what I had just done and the rapid disconnect of the wires; now I have nothing. What damage have I done and how do I fix it? I can not believe I did this! CRAP!!!

Check the main fuse.

yep...should be OK

check the bin of facts...NAPA sells an exact replacement...I keep a couple spares on the bike just in case

(google "main fuse site:fjrforum.com" for helpful threads)

Main 50amp fuse from NAPA p/n 782-1232 OR 782-2030

I admit to having zero experience on FJRs, but I've been working on cars for close to 30 years. If you subject a car to reverse polarity it can get pretty expensive. Very often any electronic module does not survive it. Spike protection diodes in all the relays can fry, and charging system regulators never make it. Often you don't know the spike protection diodes in the relays have failed until the contacts become pitted from arcing. They're usually cheap enough to replace though.

The only way to know what you did is to wire it correctly and try firing it up, then checking the function of anything electronic.

Be thorough, and good luck.

Yep, she's blowed up. Visual and multimeter confirmed. Will hit NAPA for a few of these tomorrow if they're open. Thank you for the rapid response. I was sure I had fried my ride and my trip to Bike Week was toast. I hope the fuse is the only damage done. Find out tomorrow. Thanks again.

I think you will be OK. The FJR is pretty well designed against, well, bone-head mistakes. No offense. Been there done that via other errors..

I appreciate the encouragement and kind word. If kicking yourself in the *** was fatal, I'd be dead right now. No offense taken and Bone-head is about it. Truth be told, I just wasn't thinking about it at all. Duhhh. Gotta love this forum.

yes yes I've had the little voice say in my head..."you should double check that, think twice, or wait, slow down, stop that!" ->

all a millisecond before the metal to metal contact letting the smoke out

BTDT, so felt the need to have a very minimum of farkles and wiring on the bike

Oh, I gotta ask: did you fly A-10's ???

You're just one more stitch in the fabric of this site.

You're now a member of the legion of others who've done similar things. Our stories do make interesting reading..... ;)

I did not fly A-10's but I was a Forward Air Controller (enlisted USAF). I lived and worked with the Army and deployed with Army ground units and my mission was to plan, coordinate and control (execute) close air support, and Joint Air Attack missions. Google "Tactical Air Control Party" or "ROMAD" for more info. The A-10 was my primary weapon and I'm still close with a bunch of "the guys" so the handle fits.

The motto of "The Strong Shall Stand, The Weak Shall Fall by the Wayside" goes with the TACP career field. Kind of like a secret hand shake.

Besides battery polarity, I think we also need to work on posting replies................

Should be just your main fuse. Hopefully that's it.

Changed the fuse, held my breath, hit the starter button and she sprang back to life with no complaints.

Thank you all very much.

Lesson learned.

Good to know it was only bruises to the ***, not the wallet!

Psst... Mike, someone hung your turboprops on up-side-down. Please visit your local C-130 engineer for proper mounting instructions! :assassin:
