I'm tentatively planning an FJR jaunt from the Houston, Tx. area to Savannah, Ga. leaving January 14. I'd like to include the Barber Museum in Birmingham, Ala. along the way, either going or coming.

Assuming the weather cooperates, I'll be riding with two other non-FJR riders and will have electric vest and heated grips, along with a two piece Aerostitch.

Do any of you have a favorite route that would take 2-2 1/2 days for a ride like this? Any good places to stay/eat in the Birmingham area? Maybe SouthernFJR has some suggestions?

If the weather doesn't cooperate, like ice storms or torrential rain, I'll be renting a big ass Crown Vic, picking up my buddies and going to see the museum anyway.

By the way, my wife thinks I'm more nuts than usual for riding to Savannah in January.

twilkin, 2-1/2 days aint a lot of time to get to Savanna from Houston. I live in Jackson, MS and if you are planning on stopping at Barbers you need to plan most of a day, for that alone. You are 8 hours from me and it is another 4 hours from Jackson to B'ham, that is a 12 hour day and you aren't but about half way to Savanna. I have been through it twice, my parents live less than 5 miles from the museum. FJRSTAR has made a good suggestion about 29 dreams, but you need to keep in mind that is a campground and I am not sure what comfort level you plan to maintain. If you plan to make it as far as Barbers on day 1 I would have to suggest you take the most direct route E on I20 when you get to Bessemer AL take 459--you'll bypass downtown B'ham that way and then hook back up w/I20 E on the other side of B'ham and Barber's exit probably isn't but a couple miles up the road on I20E, If I recall correctly I think it is hwy 78 Leeds exit. If you are looking for a hotel close to the museum, you can go just a couple miles further east on I20 to the next exit, the 2nd Leeds exit (also Moody) hwy 411, there are a couple nice, clean and comfortable hotels at that exit also a good selection of places to eat. Google up the Moody Chamber of Commerce, call them and they can give you the names and phone #'s of the hotels there adjacent to I20. Seriously, plan for at least 4 hours at Barbers and I would figure from there you still have another 8 hours to Savanna--timing through Atlanta is everything! Good luck, ride safe and have a great trip!

twilkin650, I almost forgot, if you decide on the I20 route, let me know and if possible I'll be glad to meet you at the Texaco at the Springridge Rd Clinton MS exit and I'll buy you a cup of java! warm up a touch, fill your feejer tank and then you can continue on to Barbers

Made the trip to Savannah, great weather along the way. We took it easy, about 1100 miles in 2 1/2 days mostly on I 10 until Tallahassee, then backroads to Savannah. I'll post some trip observations later. I'll be headed to the Barber Museum near Birmingham Friday morning, to arrive in the evening. Hope the weather cooperates half as well as it did on the trip out. :D

I forgot about your trip. Hope all is well.

Ride safe and stay alert Tim.

Don't forget to take pictures.
