A lot of people come to Idaho from California to fish. I don't know a lot of Idahoans that go to California to fish (especially during prime-time trout fishing). But, Ed kept telling me about it, he had the boat, so we made a plan.
I have a SPOT, just hit the button every hour to let the wife know I'm OK. Here's the map. Some of those hour intervals in NV are pretty far apart!
The first night three of us (Ed, Brad and I) met up at the Peppermill in Reno, NV. No pics.... I will say that resort has some nice covered parking for bikes.
Out of Reno, it was up to HWY 36. That road is fantastic!!!!
I was told the Mad River Burger bar was a must-do, so we stopped in. Food was excellent. Got a taste of the local culture with some drunk teenage kids stumbling into their jacked-up Dodge, beers in the center console. The pulled out of the parking lot tooo close to Brad's blue fjr. It was good to seem them leave. Ed with the bikes....
Further up the road, I get to see my first Redwood. Notice the size of the tree on the left...
Up early the next day, we head out of Eureka, CA for some salmon fishing on the Pacific. Ed's got the system down, and has a very sweet boat. For the first time in my life, I get sea-sick. It was a roller coaster out there, and it generally kicked my *** all day. Two things I learned: avoid bourbon the night before and take dramamine. Despite my misery, I managed to land this awesome king! (notice the angle of the ocean...)
Later that night, dinner was served. Ed and his wife made us an incredible meal. This is what you call fresh salmon:
Ed's boat, the Lagerlout:
After fishing trip, it was time to run up the coast and see Paul Bunyan, Babe, and Babe's balls.
The coast, 57 degrees in August and just as warm as it looks!
Overlooking Trinidad Bay, CA
After my stay in CA, I headed home up the northern coast of CA, to Oregon. Along the way, I saw some spectacular redwoods:
Heading to Crater Lake, OR:
The Rogue River:
Crater Lake (with forest fire smoke)
Then I road home from Bend, OR across the desert.
