First stop was just south of Port Gibson at Windsor Ruins... after surviving the Civil War the house burned in 1890

We made it to the Vicksburg National Military Park

This was a gun position over what was the Mississippi river...it has changed corse

A few of the nearly 17000 Union soldiers buried at Vicksburg National Cemetery... Confederates are buried outside the park in another cemetery

USS Cairo was sunk In the Yazoo River just north of Vicksburg

My girlfriend as we were leaving the Cairo exibit...bike thermomiter had 102 F on it

About 15 miles from home we got in a nasty thunder storm...got a little wet

The temp after we got in the rain was 73 F... 305 mles round trip

 
Thanks for the report Pharoah. I missed a battle ride to Vicksburg when I was stationed at Quantico and have always wanted to go there. Interesting how nature changes places like this, here in VA you visit battlefields and often what were open fields are now woods - you have to use your imagination to see what it was like in the day.

Vicksburg is one of the most amazing battlefields to me. All the earthwork that is still there is unbelievable. It was incredible to think about being that close for that long of a period of time.

Been to Vicksburg twice to tour the battlefield and Natchez.

I stopped at the visitor's center in Vicksburg in March when I was riding my '06 FJR AE home to PA that I had just picked up in Albuquerque, NM. Had to stop to scrape off all the bugs after crossing LA.
