I just got home from spending 3 hours at the hospital with Steve and his family. He is surrounded by a loving wife, three beautiful daughters, and his granddaughter.

I went to his house and retrieved his top box keys and went to get his belongings from the bike. I then headed to the hospital. When I arrived his family was there along with two active duty Air Force and another friend. Steve was sitting up and in good spirits. He was receiving his latest pain meds at the time. He is out of ICU and in a regular room. He doesn't have much memory of exactly what happened other than a vehicle pulling out in front of him blocking his lane and then stopping. He was quickly assisted at the scene while emergency services were called. One directed traffic while the other, who was trained in first aid/CPR tended to Steve. Can't stress enough how important it is for everyone to have that training.

His Aerostich was unscathed and Steve has no road rash. One slight abrasion on his left shoulder, but that was probably a suit rub. The Aerostich is history, though as it had to be cut off. His helmet only had two small scrapes, so he apparently didn't hit his head hard or much. They got his internal bleeding under control. Now he is dealing with a broken left shoulder, broken ribs, and the lung laceration. He mentioned that he was starting to feel some pain elsewhere like in his right arm. He will probably have some more of that as he continues to recover.

All in all, considering the accident and the bike Steve is doing pretty well. I will stop in and see him after work tomorrow. It looks like quality gear again made a real difference in the severity of the outcome.

Latest update from CaringBridge

First of all let me say that we are so incredibly thankful for the love and support that has been shown to my dad and our family. I know dad's day is brightened by all the kind words and prayers offered up by all those around him.
Today was a pretty good day. Dad sat up in the chair all day today and they even made him get up and try to walk around. My dad is so strong!
We met a doctor today who is the "go-to" person in the event that something goes wrong, or something in dads health starts to change (in a bad way). So she said that hopefully that was her first and last time having to meet my dad. So fingers crossed that we don't have to see her again!
She went over all the tests and scans that had previously been done while dad was in trauma. Most of the information was the same, there are just a few new additions. Here is the rundown of the full list as told to us today.
Dad has a lacerated spleen, lung, and liver (the cut to the liver is new, we originally thought it was just a bruise.) With these lacerations they will be monitoring dad's blood count to ensure that the embolism did what it is supposed to do, and that he isn't losing too much blood. There is some bruising to his liver and his left lung, and there is a small hemorrhage in his adrenal gland. Dad also has a concussion, which they said it could be reason as to why he doesn't remember all details of the crash.
The x-rays came back and there are no additional breaks or fractures in his arm, so that's good news.
They will continue to monitor his blood count and make sure that everything is healing on it's own, that way they don't have to look into any other procedures. So we are praying that his body heals naturally!
Mom is staying at he hospital with him again tonight, and the nurses even snagged a bed for her so she can sleep in the room with him. (No more sleeping on lobby couches!)
Anything new I will definitely be letting you know.
Thank you

Damn, just reading this! Steve lives just up the road from me.

Bob, where was the accident? I'll go to Mary Washington after work Tuesday.

I hate it when these things happen. Hope recovery continues smoothly.

A word on the helmet ...

.... His helmet only had two small scrapes, so he apparently didn't hit his head hard or much....

... Make sure he replaces it. However apparently minor its scrapes, it's taken a hard knock.

It was on Hartwood road just before Curtis Park entrance.

I will be heading back there tomorrow also.

Gall darn it. The dark side has to rear its ugly head again. But there will be a good ending to this episode. Thoughts and prayers to Steve and his family.

Sucks...and so close to home too.

Sending Steve thoughts and prayers from the west coast for a speedy and complete recovery.
