Considering that I do a lot of hiking, 4x4 trails, and camping that I may get me a SPOT locator.
This guy most likely would have been found by now if he'd been running a SPOT in tracking mode. What's $150.00/year worth in peace of mind when it comes to your whereabouts?

It's kind of like putting sliders on your bike, only a bit more important. Don't wait to get it, as it might be too late by then.

And yes, I have one, and carry spare batteries for it....

I hope this turns out OK. I've gone through a couple of mountain passes and looking down, realized that if I wound up down there, I'd never be found. Prayers sent.

On ST-Owners.com there is an update on Donald Masters and the search. They did not find him in a big search conducted yesterday. There was a picture found on a traffic cam of him in Montana later in the day of 8/31/09. They are asking for help making phone calls and financial support to aid people to continue searching. I thought folks would want to know, and it is requested a link be posted to all motorcycle forums. Prayers sent. Please see post #193 in the link below for pictures.

Two things: First the latest update frofm the ongoing search as posted on Pashnit:

First, thank you to everyone who's keeping us all safe in your thoughts, it really helps folks here stay encouraged knowing everyone is out there.

So, we did a really long day of more searching yesterday in all the prime areas that so many have suggested with not very much luck.

We REALLY NEED folks to get on the phone and start calling churches, schools, businesses, bowling allies, hardware stores, etc. in all the little towns in a 300 mile radius from Darby EASTWARD and asking them to PRINT OUT the "missing" flier and tell everyone they know to be looking.

There simply are not enough eyes here to be as effective as we'd like to be and the ONLY way there will be enough eyes is if local folks are saturated with the info.

An EASY LINK to tell them is: missingpersondonaldmasters.org

Thanks!

Second, from anoother post at Pashnit. For those interested in accquiring a SPOT tracker:

If you want a SPOT, nows the time. Cabela's has a rebate coupon; buy the SPOT, sign up for two years, get the purchase price refunded. Not a bad deal.

Here's the link to the promotion, good BTW till the end of the year.

The 2 year basic service is nearly $200 and the tracking is $50 per year, so its still kinda spendy. Then again, how can you put a price on the safety and security of you or a loved one.

Latest post on the ST site:

It is with a heavy heart that I bring you the news.

Donald Masters has been found at a crash site on Rt 93 around mile marker 322.1 between North Fork, ID and Salmon, ID

Donald and his bike were spotted by Elk hunters that were out tracking a buck. There was about 150' of shoulder and then a steep drop off into a drainage irrigation ditch. The are was covered in thick brush. He was wearing his helmet.

Out of respect to the family and loved ones we will be closing this thread and creating a Memorial Page to Donald where you can share some kinds words with everyone.

My thoughts and Prayers are with the family.

Memorial Thread

Rest in Peace Donald Masters.

Thoughts, and prayers for Don's family.....................Maybe something good can come of this, and people will think about buying a spot for riding alone, for themselves, and their family's sake..

I attended the Louisiana State CMA rally this weekend and am now home. I lifted those riders in need to the rally prayer request list and over 250 folks prayed for Donald. It is my deep hope that God uses those prayers in a mighty way in Donald's family and friend's lives with comfort and peace and whatever they may need.

<I also listed Tyler, Carl, Jim, Richard Locke (cancer ST forum), and all FJRforum and FJRriders members.>

<I also mentioned my need of an engine...>

I hope you'll don't mind...

y'all did good.

Thoughts and prayers to Donald's family and friends.

It appears he changed his route and was heading home to Colorado (speculation based on taking 93 rather than continuing on to Yellowstone). Hope his spirit is home safe now.

Complete and total bummer.

Given the area he went missing in, coupled with the almost 3 weeks elapsed time, I guess this can't be a shock. But it is sad, sad nonetheless.

I am becoming more and more motivated to look hard at the new SPOT v.2.....

The v. 2 is perhaps more user friendly and smaller, but has no new functions based on the website. I'd look to score a deal on the older version -- but YMMV.

Makes me wish they had a lower price point so more people would use them, and events like Donald's goimg missing could be minimized. For the price of a set of tires they give some peace of mind. I can't imagine my family being put through an event like Donald's crash when it could be avoided.

Terrible news. I know the stretch he went missing in, having ridden it the second to last day of my two week trip to CFR. Very pretty area he rode from where he was last spotted on the traffic cam to where he must have met his end a couple hours later. I'm seriously considering a SPOT tracker myself.

Sincere sympathies to his family and friends.

RIP Donald.
