A few minutes before I watched this crash vid, I read an article about a 2 year old little boy who was attacked yesterday at a park by a pit bull in Rochester, MN. Took three bystanders almost five minutes to get the dog to release his grip on the boy. The pit bull is now at the pound while police investigate. WTF?! Its a good thing this straight up ******* wasn't there because I'd have put a bullet through that damn dog's head. So yeah, you can say I've been pissed off at dogs today. But don't worry, I'll be back to liking them again in the morning.

I have watched this video of the guy hitting the dog about twenty times. I don't remember anything about when I hit a deer nearly two years ago, but watching that dog come from right to left getting hit by the front tire, folding the forks back stopping the front tire and causing the bike to fall to the right looks very similar to what I believe happened to me when I hit the deer. Watching the riders helmet hit pavement on the back right side is consistent with the damage my helmet sustained causing my subdural hematoma and concussion.

Looks like the rare moment when "I had to lay 'er down" was the best course to take. Too bad about the dog.

Bizarrely, as I watched that, the movie "Fargo" was playing behind me, and that distinctive violin theme music was playing. Weird.

I cannot help but feel bad about the dog. It appeared to be headed toward home and dogs are not supposed to be smart enough to know better than to run across a 4 lane highway. The dog's owner on the other hand is supposed to be smart enough to not let the dog loose around a 4 lane highway.

I cannot find fault with either of the riders "featured", the second bike reacted by trying to go around and brake heavily but it looked like his front tire was on the yellow striping and that may have contributed to his er... downfall. I wonder how many of us could have reacted or done better that quickly. My FJR and I would probably both have tracks from the tires on that semi.

But... What happened to the guys who crashed behind the original accident? It looks like they had a nice pile up back there that was completely unnecessary,

It would be easy for me to pick apart all the "mistakes" in these videos but I will settle for being grateful that it was not me and hoping for a positive outcome for these folks. You would not expect an accident like that on a straight, wide open road.

Most fortunate of all for those guys is the truck driver that was paying attention that day. Besides a dead dog would have been at least one dead rider.

But... What happened to the guys who crashed behind the original accident? It looks like they had a nice pile up back there that was completely unnecessary,

I went to the guy's FB page and there's another vid from the third bike that was down. The one bike hit the dog, the second bike went down losing the front. The third bike almost ran over the guy that hit the dog, did touch him, stopped right next to him, and had no place to put the sidestand down. Unable to roll forward without riding over the guy, and unable to put the sidestand down without stabbing him, he just put it on its right side to dismount.

As wide open as conditions were, seems like that dog would have been visible from a bit back. I wonder if the 1st rider down even saw the dog? Perhaps the video rider (being so close) was blocking his view? Pants doesn't play with animals - as soon as they are spotted, I'm slowing WAY down and if I'm leading, I'm waiving, kicking legs out, and whatever else I can think of. Of course it's a beige dog in earth tone grass and maybe it was running from afar toward the road.

I have to be vigilant about keeping 2 seconds of following distance behind the rider in front of me (more if conditions call for it).

I have to practice my emergency stops and quick inter-lane shifts.

I have (HAVE!!!!) to practice using BOTH brakes at all times so that it is more natural to me during emergency stops. I'm lazy with the front brake only, and on my bike unfortunately, that doesn't give me any rear brake with the linked system.

A dog can be trained to stay out of the road. I see it all the time. Also, we don't know if that particular dog was allowed to run free or if it escaped from confinement. Regardless, it would be the owner's responsibility.

From the motorcyclist's perspective it is much that same as if it were a wild animal rather than a dog. The riders may have been able to avoid the crash with more vigilance, but without being there we can only guess. The only obvious lesson I get from this is to leave more room between motorcycles when riding in a group.

I hope none of the riders are seriously injured. Good thing that truck driver wasn't distracted by his phone at that moment.

I've been behind a guy that hit a dog. There's not much time to think. Things happen FAST!

What's amazing to me is how the truck has the brakes locked for a loooooooong time and it sure doesn't appear to be slowing much.
