Traffic Investigators with the Chattanooga Police Department have identified Cole Jesse Neal, 26, as the victim in Friday's late night fatality on I-75. He was from the Apison-Ooltewah area. Neal was killed after being struck by a vehicle following his initial crash with another car. Police say Neal was decapitated.
Another motorcyclist was injured in a separate accident. I-75 was closed for several hours as police and emergency personnel worked to clean up the scene.
Here is a statement from Chattanooga Police Dept. Sgt. Jerri Weary:
"A chain of accidents shut down a portion of I-75 just after 11 pm Friday. Chattanooga Police Traffic Investigators responded to 18400 I-24 at the I-75 split just before 11:30 pm on a fatality involving a motorcycle. According to witnesses, a passenger car was attempting to merge over to the far right lane after missing the turn off for I-75 southbound. A motorcycle traveling behind the vehicle ran into the rear of the vehicle and went to the side of the road. As the rider was attempting to get up, he was struck by another vehicle and killed. The impact caused the rider to be decapitated."
This accident caused I-75 northbound lanes to be closed down and traffic re-routed southbound. While officers were working this wreck, another accident occurred on I-24. There were no reported injuries in that accident.
A third accident occurred near the scene of the fatality. It too involved a motorcycle. According to witnesses, traffic was slowing for the closed lanes of the fatality scene. A motorcyclist traveling northbound was struck by a vehicle following it. The rider was thrown from the bike and knocked unconscious. The rider suffered minor visible injuries but was taken to the hospital for examination of possible internal injuries. His current condition is unknown.
