I got an invite to join Dinguskahn and a few of his riding buddies to carve up a few of our wonderful NM roads recently. We had five bikes in all two FJR's, a Honda CBR1000RR, a Kaw. Ninja ZX-14, and a Yamaha R6. We met up in Nutt, NM and headed North on 27 to Hillsboro, turning West on 152 and headed up through the Gila Wilderness towards Silver City. There are many good mountain roads in this area and I won't bore you with all the little details, but for those of you who dont know this area, it's worth taking a look at a map of all the roads around Silver City.

I have to say that I learned a lot about my bike on this trip. I always considered it a sporty touring bike based on the type of riding I usually do (long road trips), but after riding with this group and watching Dinguskahn constantly dominate the other bikes on amazing switchbacks, I realized that I was riding a true sport bike that plays at being a touring bike when necessary. It took me a while to get into the groove of riding my bike like a sport bike, but I finally did after a lunch stop.

We took the time to enjoy a hike to the Gila cliff dwellings, and over all I had a blast on this ride. We put on about 370 miles of pure fun and I hated to see it come to an end. Hopefully, I will get more opportunities to ride with Dinguskahn and his little band of merry men, it was GREAT FUN.

Being forum challenged, I couldn't figure out how to add photos here, but you can go to this website then select events then select motorcycle rides. www.photostoponline.com

Philip!

Sounds like you had a fantastic ride.

Was this a out and back from Las Cruces?

I have been there several times but never had a motorcycle out there.

I am planning on riding out there maybe next spring.

One of the reasons for buying the FJR was to enable me to take some longer road trips than I could make on my old ZRX but for some reason I can't seem to make it past Arkansas (4 trips since last October when I bought the FJR).

I was planning on going to NM this fall but my family that lives there decided they were coming here to visit about the same time I was going out there so I decided to cancel that trip.

Maybe you can show me some good local rides out there.

John

Philip,

My wife and I were out there back in June of this year and I agree, the roads in that area are spectacular. Not only are they technical but the views are great too. One must not take to much time lookin at the views though. One day we were in White Sands (flatter than a pancake) and day day or so later, boom up in ht e mountains. We had a great time. 3400 miles in 11 days thru NM and Colorado.

Yes, it was an out and back from Las Cruces for me and from Deming for the rest of the group. I would love to show you some roads around our area anytime your coming out. Fall is our best riding season, although you can ride here year around.

Yep there are a lot of technical roads here. I love riding in Colorado too. Sounds like you were in the Cloudcroft area, you can get there in less than an hour from White Sands. Those are some of my favorite roads. We were in the Black Hills range West of there and the roads can get real technical.
