JACKSONVILLE - State troopers say a man and woman injured early Friday morning in a motorcycle wreck were both naked when the bike they were on veered off Meadowview Road in Jacksonville.

The man involved in the wreck is a senior enlisted Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune.

Gunnery Sgt. Steven Sheals, 38, of Meadowview Road, and his passenger, Jennifer Smith, 30, of Parnell Road in Hubert, were thrown from the motorcycle when it crashed. A trooper said the motorcycle was traveling east on Meadowview, toward Sheals’ home, when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the road into a ditch.

Smith managed to walk three-tenths of a mile for help despite a broken arm and leg, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. Smith told a trooper at the scene that she used a stick for support and walked to the office of a nearby landfill.

Troopers said alcohol was a factor in the 3 a.m. crash . The call for assistance didn’t come in until after 5 a.m., two hours after the incident occurred, troopers said.

Sheals is an explosive ordnance disposal technician with EOD Company, 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Logistics Group. He entered the Marine Corps in January 1992 and was promoted to his current rank of gunnery sergeant in June 2007. He has been with his present unit since February 2008.

Sheals has been charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving without a license, license revoked, expired inspection, no insurance and no helmet, according to authorities.

Smith was treated at Onslow Memorial Hospital, and Sheals was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Hospital, authorities said. Sheals is listed in fair condition, according to New Hanover Regional Hospital officials.

All them chgs & they fergot to add indecent exposure!
He's in the service of his country, they cut him some slack.

Believe me he's in some very deep Do Do with the Marine Corp, the civil charges are nothing by comparison

Anybody ever NOT thrown from the motorcycle when it crashed? Okay, well, maybe dCarver when he intercepted the deer. But does it really make any sense to talk about a rider's getting* separated from the bike? It doesn't really add information, like when you say "Murder is wrong." The concept of "wrongness" is embedded in the definitin of murder, which is "wrongful killing." In philosophical terms, I think that's what they call a tautology, or a Kantian analytic judgment, or some g*damned thing like that (does anybody remember?). Man that gripes my ***!--using tautologies in news reporting! :angry2: It's the end of the world as we know it!

*The gerund takes the possessive.

Hans, are you really equating journalism to intelligence?? It's supposed to make sense??

All kidding aside (okay, never  )--but journalism is at an all-time rock bottom. It's becoming impossible to separate journalism from entertainment or editorializing.
More often than not that's the sad truth. No matter how trivial the story, the press seems to blow everything completely out of proportion.
