It's a GIF file, which is essentially a string of JPG files compiled into one animation. Posts just like a JPG, works like a smiley face.

Animated GIF, didn't build it. Stole it off another forum.

Animated GIF is a multi-layer picture, each picture being a different frame in the sequence, and your browser knows how to rotate the sequence.

I did build the animated GIF that is my avatar.
