That's a fine looking repair. I'm sure that under proper care and feeding, it would last forever, although I certainly get your desire to make your baby pretty again.

I need to pick up a package of that JBW for my under seat package. Wonder what the shelf life is on that stuff? Two-part.... seems without the catalyst, it should last a while, unless storage temperature is an issue.

I think if I kept some under-seat, for the low cost of it I'd simply replace it once per yr like I do the sticky string rubber cement.

Remember what you want is the SteelStik. It is 2-part but comes in a single roll and only activates when you break off a chunk and fully knead the parts together. This stuff seems to travel well, and comes in a clear plastic cylinder once you remove the packaging. With only 5-minutes to a hard set, you can be under-way pretty quickly, and you can bridge larger gaps than the liquid 2-part stuff.

The new stator cover and gasket arrived yesterday, but instead of installing it, I went on a 250 mile ride. Got to test my repair in a pretty heavy squall line.

Sticky strings have a shelf life? I'm not that familiar with them but I have had some in the side bags for a couple years now.

Dunno about shelf life but for the minimal cost I replace the under-seat sticky strings and rubber cement annually. I think it's really more of a feel good, peace of mind thing. I've used sticky strings that were 3, 4 or maybe even 5 yrs old from an outdoor truck toolbox with no problems at all. In fact, the last one was in a tire sidewall- lasted about 35k miles until the tire wore out.

 
Only used my tire repair strings once. Forgot all about the gluey-sticky stuff and just shoved in the rubber. (Go ahead; it's Friday.)

Worked fine; tire lasted for another 5,000 miles.

Been there done that, same results.

 
Oh yea, and so glad I finally got to catch up on this one. For some reason it would pop to the top when I didn't have time to sit down and read, and then it'd bubble over to the second page and I'd forget about it. Great stuff, your brother will be railing on it in no time.

John was keeping it in touring mode and below 4k RPM. It's a great handicap for me. It will be interesting when he discovers what it is capable of doing...hopefully safely. My own addiction with the "envelope" is well established, but discovery takes time.

TomInCA: There is no 2016 in my immediate future. I really like the bike, but with my suspension setup, seats, lighting, etc, I don't feel I'm missing anything but payments.
Thank you for this. I've been seriously contemplating a 2016 until I read that line. Instead, maybe I"ll make "payments" to a savings account and wait until I have at least half saved up. By then my 07 should have 100k on it (67k now, before NAFO).

Great thread to read. Glad you're ok after your get-off! Hope your brother enjoys, and gets to know, that FJR for many fun rides.

 
That same bike will cost 4-5k less on two years with a few k miles on it. A much better deal if'n yer willin' to wait a bit. Whether it be cars or bikes, the first couple years' depreciation are a killer.

I'm not worried about depreciation :) I bought my 07 new and if I trade it in or sell it, I'm not going to worry too much about what I get. If I can get to 100k miles, I'll have great memories of everyone. (well, maybe not the ones commuting).

 
I understand. But as you probably guessed, I get to live on a budget. A very tight one at that. Of course, that's my choice, I could make a bunch of money if that was the goal. But for me, buying new is just not a wise choice.

I am VERY glad however, that our beloved FJRs are do doggone reliable that buying a used one, even one with a bunch of miles, is for the most part a non-issue: they just don't break. I honestly never dreamed that I could buy a used motorcycle (it was 5 years old when I got it), drive it for 6 years, and have no major mechanical issues or reliability problems. That blue machine in my garage is just about bulletproof. Ha. Wish I could say the same for most of the other things I own.

Concerning the new model, I thought that new clutch was a great idea. Imagine that, a slipper clutch AND a lighter clutch pull. What will they come up with next?
