Ed Savko passed away in hospice yesterday. He founded the Rock Store along with his wife Vern, and turned a canyon cast-off into one of the top motorcycle hangouts in the world. I was lucky to meet and talk with him twice before his death, and I came away with such respect and affection for Ed.
The first time, a group of us gathered around while Ed and Vern regaled us with tales of how they used to look after Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, and Steve McQueen when they had partied a bit too much or got kicked out of their house and needed a place to rest.
A few months later, we revisited Ed to thank him for keeping the faith all these years, and presented him with a cool custom Steve McQueen helmet.
He was totally tickled by the gesture, and we all felt a bit more special, as we knew he was getting older and not doing as well.
They don't make guys like Ed much anymore. Toast to Ed tonight. Rest in Peace.
