I am shopping for roadside assistance plans. Other then my insurance which is pretty much useless if I am taking a road trip. Wondering what you would recommend?

I've got the AAA Plus package that includes motorcycle roadside assistance, but I've never needed to use it.

The part about AMA's MoTow that concerns me is this:

"Towing up to 35 miles by a vehicle equipped to handle motorcycles"

Only 35 miles? Is that per tow truck? (5 claims per year). What if I'm near Eureka, NV? There's not a Yamaha dealer within 35 miles. What if I'm out in CA (hometown 1600 miles east)??? Just sayin' :D

How about the Yamaha YES plan. It also has roadside assistance and trip interruption.

I've got both the Y.E.S program which should come thru and Progressive insurance. The Progressive has competitive rates and promises to haul your bike with "motorcycle compatable equipment", what ever that means. Haven't had to use it but they seem like an up front group

Good point. I guess I figure that between that and my insurance roadside assistance and the credit card in my pocket my bike will end up where I need it to....

Hopefully I will never have to find out!!!

:D

Last year I got nailed in the rear tire in Birney CA. The closest place that could fix it was in Redmond, 60 miles away. MOTOW sent a truck no charge. I hope i'll never have to find out if they'll go 100 miles.

I use MTS, Motorcycle Towing Service. Have had them for more than 10 years. Only needed to use once, but I was very glad I had them when I needed help. Covers two bikes for $90.00 per year and up to $300 of tow cost. Only use motorcycle tow vehicles.

If you own a Recreation Vehicle of any kind, you might want to consider signing up with the Roadside Assistance Plan through Camper's World. It not only covers your RV, but also every other vehicle you own. The plan fully covers towing and provides several other benefits as well. Cost is $99 annually.

I'm taking the FJR Assistance List for my trip out to California this week. My insurance company says they'll reimburse for towing, so we'll see. I hope I do not need it

I have Progressive, used it a couple of time with my Jeep (not off road, just in the driveway!) and once with the Harley.

The bike had a flat tire around the corner of I70 and I15... fortunately Verizon has a corridor of cell service along those roads, so I was able to get to Progressive.

However, the gal on the other end could not figure out WHY I could not tell her what mile marker I was at or what town I 'd just passed.

I tried to tell her the mile markers were one mile apart, not every .10th of a mile like they are back east!

A nice Utah Hiway patrolman stopped, took my cellphone and told her exactaly where we were.... He thot she was funny, and that I pbly looked funny too... I was pacing back and forth in the wind and rain, and just about yelling on the phone when he stopped..

The tow driver happened to pass on the other side, went back to the shop and got a bike trailer, showed up and we got the bike loaded.

The driver... I didn't get which company, but I think they're the only ones out there, called 5 shops before he could find a Honda shop that had the correct size tire. Progressive didnt' want to pay for the tow, only to the closest shop, but the 4 closer shops only worked on dirt bikes and atv's. The driver talked to Progressive, and whatever he told her, I got the free tow. About 65 miles, otherwise he was going to tow me to H-D in Vegas, about another 130 miles away and send Progressive the bill!

Of course it was a Monday, and the fix it part was closed...but the mech just happened to be there doing some work on his own bike.

Got towed, a new tire and out the door in 3 hours. That was pretty lucky.

so far, only experience needing help on the road for the bike.

The RV, OTOH, that Camping World tow package (I paid $78 when I got it) paid for at least an hour and a half tow with a 30" Class A...

In the middle of a Sunday afternoon on the Indianopolis freeways.... from the south side of Indy to way up on the north side.<BG> If I didn't' have Progressive and AAA, I'd keep that one, but I sold the rv, more than paid for itself.

Last year before folding space to attend WFO, I heavily researched roadside assistance programs for motorcycles. What I found was the more I researched, the less I discovered and the more I had to assume.

For me, it came down to deciding who's program offered reasonable benefits AND had a large area/concentration of service providers. Example being...

Provider-A; has more than 15,000 service providers in the continental USA, with a 30-mile included rate.

Provider-B; has more than 3,000 service providers in the continental USA, with a 100-mile included rate.

IMO, it seemed that I stood a better chance of getting "free" towing from Provider-A, even though they have a smaller included distance.

I currently have AAA on my cagers, YES on the bike, and AMA MoTow coverage. Since I'm a lifetime member of AMA, the extra $19 /year was just enough incentive to win over AAA's mega-costly RV/Motorcycle/Auto rates.
