Rotella T6 and Dino is now JASO Approved per Shell website. FYI :yahoo:
And what exactly does that mean?
Not much...I think the paperwork/certification finally caught up with the laboratory test.
I think JASO certification takes into account (more than just standard automotive/diesel truck testing) motorcycle engines and especially engines with transmissions (and clutch) using the same oil as the engine.

It's true that often lube oils would pass the test -- if tested; but it doesn't hurt to have the actual certification.

I just cannot decide what I like better, a good oil thread or a good Harley bashing thread. I enjoy them both.

So to continue the fun think about this:

Dino oil is not 'Dino' oil. The theory that oil is from rotting plants and dinosaurs is absurd. For the amount of oil we have pumped out of the ground, trillions upon trillions of gallons, from in some cases hundreds of feet below the surface, we would have needed a dinosaur population that would have stacked them to the moon. Or at least half way. Also consider the depth of some of these oil deposits. Who buried all those dinosaurs that far down? Oil is just an occuring element of the ground.

Now as far as the color goes, this is easily understood. If you prefer to stick with the "Dino" oil theory then you are going to see dark oil when you pour it out of the bottle because you are convinced the oil was created in the Dark Ages and hence the color. I am convinced the oil is created naturally in the ground and when I put it in my bike I have a hard time seeing it in the sight glass due to it's very light color. So it's really just a matter of perspective.

That's all I have to say about that.

Oh Lord help me! How did this come up again....???

Someone please post a thread where a motor oil actually caused an engine failure. Otherwise, we're done.

Oh no it is like Global warming, An endless thread. Well It is a Holiday for the States so I will bite. Some oil I believe comes from the mantle most I believe is from organic material.

Now wait a minute Mr. Blue.

You of course are absolutely right, and I agree. If there are all of these different "prefered" oils, and nobody is reporting any type of engine failures over many miles, then they all must be OK.

But there is one report of oil control rings being found carboned, or stuck, in the ring grooves. I would like to know what type of oil that person was using.

Paging Mr. Ionbeam to white courtesy phone.

I think, more important than an oils lubricating qualities, (not that lubricating qualities are not important but as you point out all the oils seem to do just fine in that regard), is the oils ability to control deposits. Unfotunately it takes about 100k miles and an engine teardown to find that out. And at that point you have only analysed one oil type.

When I switched all my high mileage vehicles to Snythetic Rotella I noticed that the oil got very dirty very quickly. I performed 2 short oil changes at about 2500 miles and they are more stable now staying cleaner longer. So it seems this oil is better at controling deposits and cleaning the engine than the regular automotive engine oils. This may be important.

Let the games continue.

Interestingly I could not find any Rotella T with the JASO cert around here in 4L jugs. Did find a 5 Gallon pail of it though...

... so I guess that's what I'm using for the next 5 oil changes! :)

Actually, the darker color is part of scam to sell more oil. They know FJR owners are going to look in the sight glass, exclaim "Holy **** !" and change it out at half life or earlier. After a brief discussion here it will be noted that it must clean better/suspend more particles making it the oil of choice.

You may have balled that up for them now that you've noticed the difference right off. ;)
