I have a 2003 with 285,000 kms on it. The only thing that I have ever done to it was replace the ignition switch and regular type maintenance. I run full synthetic and premium gas.

It was running great up until about a month ago then it would not idle. I cranked up the idle and it now idles rough. When I am at any speed it runs fine and it sill pulls like a frieght train. Gas mileage is the same.

I took the plugs out and they are a bit white, but no oil or carbon build up. It does run better now but not purrfect like before.

Anyone out there have had the same issues or any suggestions on whats up.

Thanks

When you say 'white' are they lighter than normal? (With 285,000 kms you will have seen a few sets of plugs).

Paler than normal indicates leaner, but why?

Not really sure what symptoms you would get with a partially blocked air filter, but worth a look anyway.

I guess it would be worth investigating the fuel supply, just in case you are getting fuel starvation.

Seems to me that there is a large(ish) white connector under the tank on Gen I that is subject to corrosion issues resulting in rough running? Throttle position sensor is worth checking. Check battery terminals too.

I would follow Ross's suggested things to check, my guess is either electrical connection or TPS.

Also congrats, that sounds like one of the highest mileage Canadian FJRs.

Great to hear about 03s still racking up miles.

The recommendation to inspect connectors by Ross is great advice.

Since it pulls hard above idle it sort of rules out a plug wire displaced from the cap or a cap not seated on the plug.

It mostly rules out an air filter because a restricted filter primarily shows up at higher rpm where it doesn't flow well, plus the plugs would look rich.

It would be prudent to take the low $$$ (concession to a foreign frozen country to the north weird monitory system) and run a tank of two of fuel system cleaner, following the manufacturer's dosing instructions.

It would be good to check the TBS.

If checking the simple, low buck items doesn't sort it out, the symptoms are a lot like a bad TPS. Troubleshooting a bad TPS isn't as straight forward, it can pass most tests and still be bad. A symptom of a bad TPS is failing when hot and failing in a narrow rpm band.

If you had a problem with the choke system your plugs would look rich.

It's worth looking at your diAG codes and see if any are set in history.
