I did 678 on my way back from up north once. It's a typical doable 1 and 1/2 lane that runs with the Cowpasture River; some twisties, some gravel and some rough patches (but not to worry, good ol' VDOT will post signs about the gravel ahead, to hell with actually sweeping the road!).

If you did the whole high ground promenade ride from Lewisburg, your butt at that point would probably be ready for the rest of you to just book it down 220 from Monterey.

EDIT: here's a coupla pics from along 678 near Williamsville:

Heidi, Jim, Creta and Gary,
Wow, I took my oldest daughter Sarah on her first Big Motorcycle ride this same weekend!! We went up to Petersburg, WV via 33 out of Harrisonburg, VA stopping in Franklin and Seneca Rocks. Sunday I took her down Smoke Hole road to 220, then down to Monterey, VA. We jumped down 39 through Goshen Pass and then back up again and got on 220 again headed to The Homestead for lunch. Stayed on 220 all the way to Winston -Salem, NC to go see Grand Ma and Grand Pa & Mom and little sister, she had a ball! Now isn't that a cowinky-dink?

We just missed ya. Came thru Goshen on Sat afternoon. Glad Sarah had a good time.

Jim, can you please send me the original text for that ride? For sure, that set of twisties past Monterey is some of the best on Rte 250. If the high ground routing is that long, perhaps a route should be created that is fairly direct to 250 by going up 219. That isn't a disappointing ride atall'.

That would've been a trip if we pulled up at the scenic overlook & you were there, Jay.

Hello, calling EOM GPSmeister Haulin' Ashe...Hello...sounds like Rt 250 from Huttonsville to Monterey (the original route) might should be put back into the High Ground Wanton Promenade ride...in spite of your VAphobia! ...Hello...anybody out there?...Hello...
Good Lord, did he actually take this out? Jeff!!!!!!! What are you doing?????
I'd like to see 250 added in to CR 629 which looks like it turns into 678... & then take 39W into Marlinton & south on 219 back to Brier Inn.

Did High Ground Wanton Promenade take you back to 39 on 220?

I'm thinkin' that we need to scout 629/678 & extend 250 thru all of the good twisties if these roads are good to go.
So it took y'all almost a full damn year to find something to publicly ***** about. I hope you feel better now.

I don't have VAphobia. I hate any state that does not permit the use of Radar Detectors. If somebody has the right to transmit the signal, I should have the right to receive it. It's a basic principle of true freedom that has helped keep this country great.

And yes, as I recall, there were a couple 300-mile routes that I whacked down to 200 miles in order to reserve ample time for the consumption of adult beverages and to give Fencer time to "freshen up" on a rainy Friday.

:)

If Jim wants me to do a "sin-RD" route, I will gladly accommodate.

Ooh, such a nice way of putting your phobia, Jeff. There are some of us that you cannot fool. Good line, though... really, really good.

If you remember correctly, I am not the one who created these routes... nor talked over what would be whacked out of the routing. I should also be clear that I am not bitching.

Even you would have fun on Rte 250. I'd pinky swear on that one. ;)

Do you remember 311 over Potts Mountain??? It's in VA.
