I am REALLY not trying to start another oil thread here, I just have a simple question... I want to run the Royal Purple 15-40W synthetic in my FJR. someone recently told me that it might be too slick for the wet clutch system and I might to get some info on running it in a bike. My question is simple. Has anyone run this oil and had any ill effects???

Thanks,

What you're looking for is the "Energy Saving" stamp. Don't use if that stamp is present.

Most 10W- and 5W- oils have that.

Your avatar is just so appropriate for this question

If the container says that your purple oil is energy conserving or has the energy conserving logo, don’t use. No logo, does not claim to be energy conserving, then pour it in.

Edit: Dang I must type slow, duplicate response.

no knowledge here, 15W-40 is the right viscosity range for my '04.

why don't you give it a try, since you want to, and report on it?

Well, I took a look at their website: and the 15-40 you mention is an automotive motor oil. Probably, no biggie?, but they do offer motorcycle oils: Max-Cycle.

On the plus side, the m/c oils are said to meet JASO (which is good -- especially, if you happen to own a Japanese m/c engine) and are available in 10-40 (which is fine for the FJR). It also has a decent V.I. (viscosity index) at 155.

On the negative side, one of the claims-to-fame was: that when tested on an H-D, the appropriate Royal Purple oil reduced engine temperature from 24 ~ 44 degrees F. Well, that's just not going to be of much use on an FJR -- where the engine temperature is controlled by the coolant thermostat.

(you may wear-out your 'stat' trying to keep the engine warm....? :( ;) )

The other big claim is reduced cam chain tensioner wear.

Their 'patent' appears to be "Synerlec" -- which is some form of 'molecular bonding'....

Nothing, here, looks like it might 'harm' anything.

The previous advice to: try it & report -- seems good to me. :)

From test results I have seen. Royal purple is not worth the money. It was one of the 1st brands to change viscosity due to shearing from the transmission gears. Believe it or not, el cheapo Rotella T 15W40 kept up to the best of them in this department and it's only 13 bucks a gallon here. I am switching on my next change.
