I had a 1996 Royal Star (bought new) and put about $5K in accessories (bags, windshield, light bar, pipes, seats, etc.) Solid, indestructible, nice looking, heavy, lousy cornering clearance, vibrates, too much sprung weight on front.) S.O. liked to go for rides on the back (about the only decent thing about a cruiser.) I sold my Star for less than I had in accessories in 2006 after 10 years. I also had a sport bike during that time also for solo rides.

I had an 05 TD I put 36k miles on.

I loved it! But, to be fair, it was my first bike and you always love your first.... :)

It's a giant unwieldy beast especially at low speeds but it was bulletproof, never gave me a second of trouble, was fun to cruise with, got lots of compliments/looks...

"Better" as in "better than an FJR"? That's completely subjective and up to you and your passenger. I'm sure the TD would be more comfortable for the passenger (my wife occasionally fell asleep back there!) but, compared to the FJR, a lot more "boring" for the rider.

We went on many long distance trips 2up on the TD but haven't had a chance to do a long distance trip yet on the FJR (my wife rides her own bike now) so I can't be definitive but I've seen plenty of folks on these forums riding 2up and they seem perfectly happy with it.

That having been said, I was a lot more comfortable on the stock TD than I am on the stock FJR. I never swapped the seat on the TD and would go 500 miles in a day with minor discomfort. I have excruciating pain in the posterior on the FJR after only 100 miles. :( And I never swapped the TD's stock windshield but had to do it almost immediately on the FJR.

IMHO most women like to ride cruisers, they're low & slow but still fun from the pillon. Eventually she'll probably want to ride a Gold Wing (that chair looks so comfortable.) I could live with a wing & a ZX-10.

If your looking for a big comfy cruiser, check out the Star Venture Royale.

Hard to beat as far as features for the money.

A friend of mine bought one this summer and just returned from a 3000 mile 2-up trip.

He loves it . He had previously been through 3 of the original style Yamaha Ventures over the last 25 years.

It's no hot rod but he wasn't looking for one.

I have an 05 RSTD and love it. It also has been bullet proof. I haven't done much 2up but I can push it and do 500 miles in a day and still walk after (stock seat and shield). I have given consideration to changing the seat.

And yes, I agree it can be a pig at low speeds but you can get over that or...just don't go slow.

Without starting the debate about the looks, the Victory Vision is something to consider. I had a demo ride and was very impressed with power and comfort.
