Latest issue of Motorcyclist made mention of a future FJR rumored to be powered by a triple cylinder engine.

Would help make the bike narrower, seems Yamaha believes 3 in a row makes them go?

I love triples!

Plus, removing a cylinder and all that is involved with it, should reduce the price.

I'm for it....

:)

Old news

It's not an FJR, it's an FJ-09, based on the FZ-09's mechanical bits.

OOPS!!! It's Friday. Damn me for posting actual information!!!!! Crap!!!

Corrected post: Gee, if only Yamaha already had the running gear from which to make some kind of 3-cylinder sport/tourer... Maybe they could make something from the FZ-09, which when I rode it simply BEGGED for a windshield!

Damn drunk druggies anyway.. Stick to dope a' booze..

Ya won't look quite as stupid to some of us then.

Yes I'd all for narrower, for us shorter (legs) peeps...

The biggest reason I grew to love the FJR's wide ratio 5 speed tranny (vis a closer ratio 6 speed) is the way it allows the rider to utilize the engine's torque to control the bike with just one hand. A closer ratio 6 speed has the rider clutching and shifting more in low speed mountainous wanderings. Sometimes in the Sierra passes (Ebbets comes especially to mind), I like to dawdle and sight see at lower speeds, just enjoying the view or even snapping pics left handed. Seems like the greater low end torque of a big three cylinder would be good for that, while still providing the higher speed long distance comfort we've all come to love with FJRs. If it were to reduce weight, too, then I'd see that as a benefit. In contrast, I don't see slightly narrowing the engine as any big deal.

OTOH, I suspect that a lighter version of the FJR (e.g., using a drive shaft on Yamaha's 900cc triple) might be the perfect sport tourer for smaller stature riders and women. So, in a perfect world, I could see two FJRs based on triples - a 1300 and a 900, both shaft driven, sharing luggage, maybe some drive components, and some fairing/lighting pieces, etc. IOW, all new "His and Hers" FJRs. I don't expect that to happen, and as it is, I'm still plenty happy with my Gen.1 FJR as a standard sized male for whom MC ergos seem most often to be designed.

To continue exskibum's Select-a-Size FJR, lop off one cylinder, increase displacement to 2.3 L, add 300 lbs and call it a triumph of engineering and now you can compete with the Touring-Sport bikes ;)

Well, besides the one rumor I read in Motorcyclist yesterday, now I have read it 3 more times! (Hopefully the admins will clean up the triple posting)

IF!!! that is the case some of those who did not like the Liquid Graphite of the '15 FJR might suddenly find it very attractive.

Speaking of 3 times

I was born with 3 nutz.. I thought myself unattractive, 'till a goat ate one off when I was passed out drunk in La Pine.

Even numbers are sexy!

Three cylinder engine--what a pipe dream! Give me a break.

Anyway, i have it on VERY good authority that the future FJR will be using a 5 cylinder 4 stroke 3 injector valveless axial engine.

Whenever I ride a 3 cylinder bike it's usually because of a loose plug wire.

I think that Duke concept has potential. For now though, conventional stuff is just fine.

I saw that article in the January 2015 issue of Motorcyclist, which I received today. I love this kind of stuff. Thanks for posting.
