Marcus, sorry to hear that. On th e bright side, looks like he lived a very long time.

14 is a good age for a labby, or any other bigger dog for that matter. Like people, the good ones seem to pass along quicker.

We've had a number of 4 legged friends grace us with their time over the years. That's the way we try to look at it. They aren't "our's" (as in possessions), they're just friends that stayed with us a while.

Of course, when my best-est buddy Petey decides to leave, I will be completely devastated.

Had to go there last fall with our pup. She was hurting, had an internal infection, had to do it. She looked back and forth between my wife and I as she drifted away. She was looking me in the eye when she left us.

We'd already picked up another pup, and he's been great ever since. The other animals spend some time with the question on their faces - where's she at? Then they move on, helping us move on.

Not much to add except that those of us that have been there know exactly how you feel... after we lost out last one, I recommended that we go dog-free for a bit...the end is sometimes just too difficult...but my wife said the house was just different without a dog... thank God for her and all of our furry friends..Willie, Shep, Dottie...and now Mac

Our thoughts are with you, as Husky Rider's story goes It makes sense but it's still very tough at the time to do whats best for them.

I want to Thank everyone for the warm thoughts, I have never thought it would be this tough, one minute I'm doing ok and the next I'm losing it. We feel better and a sense of peace that Koa has to no longer suffer the effects of old age, I think there was more going on inside but as soon as he started getting worst we knew it was time. We will be spending the next week in the San Jaun Island's on a friends boat so the timing is perfect that Deborah and I can reflect and remember our Koa boy.

Thanks

Marcus,

Sorry to hear about your lab. I know how you feel. I'm on my 2nd male lab and the first (Jake) was pre-kids. He was the best of best dogs. Diesel (my 5 year old lab is a stud, but Jake will never be replaced).

Fyi, we actually breed labs and perhaps I could help you out on the next litter. Here is a picture of one of our pups. He's just under year a old in the picture. The owner brought him over for us to see. :)

Dave,

I will keep you in mind when it comes time to get another, we still have Kalani and she is 12. were going to give her lots of loving, she has always had Koa in her life and they were always together, even when walking they were attatched together and she would have the leash. I guess the female always leads the way

So sorry for your loss. A dog can be there when no one else understands you.

They seem to sense your pain (Physical and mental) They truly "stand by you"

I lost my Akita "Tobias R.B. Luvidfirst" and it wiped me out for quite a while.

He was a large dog (136 Lbs) and the vet said the larger breeds have "Undersized"

hearts... Maybe physically they do. The loss affected me so much that I chose

my next best friend to grow a little less and hopefully live a little longer, as I could

not deal with the loss so well. Zorro is a shiba inu (Mini Akita) and is aging now too.

Best to hold on to m the memories they bring in the short time they are with us.

May your pain be lightened.

My Mom adopted a Collie-Shepherd, who came to live with us when Mom passed in 2003. Now Happy's almost 15 and having trouble getting up. It hurts every time she doesn't pop right up off the floor.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Sorry for your loss. I've only had to put a dog down once so far, a 2 year old german shepherd named Shiloh. That was the hardest thing I've ever done, ever.

14 years is good for a lab though, I hope our lab lives that long (6 now). I say get a new fluffy puppy when you're ready, puppies are awesome and tend to make the world less sucky :D

Looking back, I am so grateful that I obeyed a serious piece of advice from my beloved vet doctor...he said "it's infinitely better to say goodbye to your canine friend one day early than one day late (alive but suffering or disabled)"...as in when it comes down to just a little doubt when you walk in their paws so to speak...it is time and one must gather the courage and resolve to have it done without backing out. Bottom line, we must put ourselves aside and look out for our friend which is so difficult. I have great memories of Reggie "whole", even on her last day, with no regrets. I acted in HER best interest and was able to go to that place in my mind that separated her from child (not real) to pet (real).

My experience with much over a dozen family doggies and kitties shows how true this has turned out to be in life.
