Saddle Bag Locks

So I'm riding down the road, minding my own business, with less than 90 new miles on my newly-purchased used '05 ABS model, and I feel something hit lightly fall onto the back of my right calf. Still in the break-in phase (me - not the bike with 13k miles on), I think to myself, "Huh, maybe the tire kicked something up?"

But alas, no. Upon arrival at home, I realize that it was the lock that hit me. Popped clean out of it's little hole, leaving that little brass tongue in the gap. But no lock. And I've no idea where to go back and start looking for the thing.

So I'm off to a dealer near me to buy another as the previous owner did not supply the third, more convenient top-case lock with the bike. (Wondering if he hadn't lost one already.)

Unless someone has a better idea about where to get a replacement lock or set of 'em? How much am I going to pay at a dealer for new ignition lock + case locks?

(And friends, I read the FAQ, I swear, but there's only so much a fellow can digest after reading these boards for 8-10 hours before riding for the first time.)

Sorry about your misfortune, but you helped me out. Like you I read the FAQ when I joined last year and knew about the non-locktited screws, but hadn't gotten 'round to it. With over 10,000 miles on my bike since I bought it new, I decided to check the screws yesterday. Surprise, surprise :angry: the dealer didn't use locktite and the screws were only handtight. A quick application of BLUE locktite on the stock screws (too lazy and cheap to buy new ones) and I'm good to go.

I suspect that your dealer won't have the part in stock anyway, so you're better off just ordering parts online for less $$. There's numerous sources online where you can look up parts and prices (like ronayers.com) and I've found that zanottimotors.com is usually the cheapest place to order parts from.

Contacted the previous owner of the bike to see if he had that illusive third, spare lock that came with the bike. No joy so far, so I'm thinking I'm going to have to buy one.

Called a local dealer - they want $92 for one saddlebag lock!!! Found them online for about $60, but now wondering how, if I ordered it online, can I get it re-keyed to match my existing locks? Anyone have guidance on that? Will a typical locksmith be able to do it, or am I stuck with having the Yamaha shop do it (for $60 or something!)?

Your local Locksmith should be able to reset the lock to your old key. Just a matter of changing a couple of little metal tumblers.

Most locksmiths can re-key the new lock to match your existing ignition and luggage. (for a small fee, of course)

I just lost one of my locks this last weekend. So when you order the saddlebag lock online for $60 what does that include? Does it come with a key? I was thinking about ordering two and replacing both, that way I could have two different keys, one for the ignition and one for the bags. Is that even possible?

Certainly you can order 2 locks, but why not key them alike and simply carry two keys - that way you can open the bags without shutting down the bike AND, if something happens to your primary key you can use the other as a backup

Well did my screws today on my 10. As expected no locktite, but there is now. They were not loose but it took very little to turn them. Should not go anywhere now.

Read in the fact section long ago but forgotten until today. It was security fastener day.

I know this is a very old thread, but I picked up a used '08 AE model today.

I removed the bags and noticed a problem with the one on the rider's right.

Sure enough, one screw was missing, and the other was about to become missing.

On the left side, both were present, but one was nearly out.

I remembered this thread. I had some hope that the screw's size would be given, but I guess I'll just have to go to the hardware store with one of the screws. I had no trouble with the security head on the screw. I'd bought a set of drivers, one of which fits, for some other project, and was lucky enough to be able to put my hands on them when I needed the today.

This seems like an issue that dealers would deal with. If the screws fall out, you can lose the bags at speed, and that's a legitimate safety concern, not just an expense.

I went to Lowe's today and got some red loctite, along with a $.58 package containing two M3-.5 x 6 screws.

The screw fit the hole, so if someone else is wondering what the size is, M3-.5 x 6 appears to be correct.

Glad to see I am not the only one with this problem. Lucky for me I was in the garage getting ready to leave, went to lock the bag and pulled the entire cylinder out with the key..

now to get it all back together.

Luckily I had the right torx bit and red loctite in the garage, all better now.
