Hey all, I've got about 600 miles on the 2008 FJR and wanted to make a comment. I read somewhere on this site about a few people having trouble with their hard bags just "falling off the bike" while riding. I honestly thought they hadn't secured the hard bags correctly to the bike. As of today I understand what they mean.

Luckily mine didn't come off but there is a problem that I want to communicate so all will be aware. I'm very unsatisfied with every Yamaha dealer I've been to. Most of the mechanics are unfriendly and not very good. Anyhoo, the problem I'm talking about is the locking mechanism for the hard bags. If you unlock the case and pull up on the tab that opens the case (not the one that releases the case from the bike) on the bottom of the actual lock there are two small screws. Both of these fell off of my left side bag, luckily it was in my garage.

On both cases the screws were finger tight from the factory (or dealer). I added some loctite and retightened all four screws on both bags. They are a tamper proof torex T8 headed screw. I suggest everyone check this as all four of mine were loose. Kind of hard to get to but most will understand it when you see it. Hope this helps someone.

By the way, all I can say about the bike is: "WHAT A MACHINE"! Regards, Dirk.

Some people obviously don't take the time to read the information presented to them. I count two in this case.

Good catch, but very well documented in the Bin O Facts. It's on the "Every new owner should check this" list.

When I got my 06, I saw several threads from folks mentioning the need to Loctite the bag lock screws. When I read it, I was one of the folks that thought everyone else was being paranoid and that this would never happen to my bike. I remember about 5 months later going up to the bike to put some stuff in one of the bags and I found the screws sitting under the tab to release the bag cover.

I did the same as you and used Loctite to fix it.

After that, I went back and read through the Bin O' Facts and have done everything that has been suggested for new Gen II owners. I suggest you do the same. Specifically steering head nut torque, etc.

I did read the bin-o-facts and did everything it suggested (except this) prior to picking up the bike. I just didn't understant which screws it was talking about until I had the problem. I've now done the entire checklist. I thought Yamaha's QC would be better than this and I haven't been impressed with Yamaha at all.

And some people look like a fat slob riding their bike. I count one in this case.
Oh Ruprecht. WRONG answer. You were much better off when you were eating apple sauce with a cork on the end of your fork. Let's just take that away from you so you don't hurt yourself or others. Go play and run in Oklahoma for a while.
