This might be just dream but I got thinking about doing an SS1000 in mid-May starting in the San Francisco Bay Area (mid Peninsula) and most likely using it as the finishing point also. I've been looking at several out-and-back routes and several loop routes. The loop routes many come in about 1200 miles....

So far my main priorities are: 1) low likelihood for animals at the end of the route, 2) avoid likely congestion areas at rush hour, and 3) not a lot of twisties.

Anyone riding one from the Bay Area and returned? What route did you use?

TIA,

Roy

Roy,

I've ridden a brazillion Iron Butt rides out of the Bay Area. I live in San Leandro. Wildlife is just not an issue, at least where I live. I've never seen a deer within 100 miles of home. Traffic, on the other hand, is a killer. Whatever you do, don't try to start a timed ride between 3PM and 8PM. If it's a Friday, don't start after 12 noon. There are as many routes as you can dream of. They all work. Hell, you can out-and-back to Eugene or Elko in less than 1200 miles.

Let me know if you need any witnesses, but of course your wife is just a good a witness and she doesn't have to get out of her jammies.

off-topic a bit: I know you don't want twisties...but I am curious what the twistiest Cal instate SS1000 that has ever been done.

I know there was a great instate twisty SS at Nafo 2008...I was just wondering if there has been a similar thing in Cal?

Roy...sometimes the anticipation is worst than the ride itself. Set aside your emotions and worries and develop a plan you intellectually think you can do. Make sure it's sound based on some of the criteria Jerry talked about. Then go ride it. Chances are you'll succeed. If you don't, I guarantee you'll have learned some vital thing about yourself, your equipment or your planning that will make your next attempt that much more likely to be successful.

Go for it Roy. Although I can't add any advice regarding the Bay Area, once you put a plan together and get going you'll find yourself done pretty quickly (so to speak). Keep the wheels turning and it'll be done in 18 hours or so.

Good luck!

Mr. Wheaton,

The answer to that question would be GZ's legendary Up-Chuck 1000:

Who's going to organize me a JayDub 1000 to run on the solstice? :)
What's that?

I might take you up on being witness as the week I was thinking of doing the SS1000 is when my wife is at San Simenon for a week.
Sure thing, just shoot me the dates and if I'm in town I'll be glad to take care of you.

About your route, I could send you bunch of old routes that I've ridden from here. And some that I haven't ridden yet but took the time to plan out. However I think you should plan it yourself. It's more fun that way, plus it forces you to consider all the things that are important to YOU. Post here, or PM me details. Feedback gladly given.

I've come up with a route to each major compass point - damn I just can't fit water skis and find the necessary fuel stops to play one to the West! Give me a couple of weather options.

I may have missed / not remembering it, what is the time relationship / requirement between witness signatures the start and finish gas receipts?
