What can I say, that hasn't already been said here, other than to add my thanks to all those who gave their service and often their lives, that I might enjoy freedom. You are appreciated, and not forgotten.

I woke up this morning more conscious that it was a day off than why it was a day off. But by a happy and serendipitous coincidence I have been reminded dramatically and painfully what today is all about.
It is a shame that only one day a year brings this topic to the fore. I matured in the Army over 8 years of service with some really great comrades in some pretty tough front-line units as an Airborne Ranger and infantryman. It was there that I came to realize just what ideas like Duty, Honor, & Country really mean in our special (American) situation. It was this awakening that also taught me how fragile our freedoms are and why it is so important to jealously guard them from any assault or encroachment whether the threat is internal or external. It was there I learned the true value of what so many of our fellow Americans simply take for granted.

Those warriors who don't come home alive should possess a very special place in the hearts of all Americans...and I wish it were so. Today, America still commits the flower of her youth to the trials of mortal combat for honorable reasons. May God bless them all and their families for their willingness to risk everything in this world for an honorable cause.

And consider this...I sincerely believe it is not enough to simply declare your support for the troops as so many are wont to do today. You should also declare your support for the truly honorable cause for which they strive.

Remembering my comrades who could not make it here today...

I am,

Wee Willy

Thanks for this Stephen...this is the most remarkable strike aircraft to ever take to the skies from a cat -the venerable and irreplaceable A-6E...what a machine. A 28k lb aircraft with a useful load of 30k lbm, this Grumman Intruder is a marvelous work of engineering. I lift my glass to the men and women who designed, built, flew and maintained this old gal. A marvelous picture.

Cheers,

W2

I was fortunate enough to spend today aboard CV-12 USS HORNET in Alameda Ca. with some of our fine veteran's and others to honor those who died and gave it all for our country. To those who did and those veterans and current enlisted military, and also police, fire and rescue people who give of themselves fully so we all can be free, I say thank you all! Everyday, not just on Memorial Day. God bless America!! Painman. <>< :good:

On our way home from a weekend at my folks' place, we stopped at the cemetery in Ione to give a few moments of gratitude to those who have given so much for the freedom we enjoy.

There was a gentleman, a veteran and VFW member, who was walking through the grave sites and making sure that every one of them, no matter what war or battle they served in at whatever time, had a flag set by it.

I greeted and thanked him for taking the time to do this "small" task and, with tears in my eyes, hugged him with gratitude for his efforts for those fallen soldiers. As I stepped away, he stood at attention and saluted... I returned in kind as best I could.

Godspeed to all those who have laid down their lives and to those who continue to do so, and the families that stand by them. Thank you.

I wasn't too happy about our camera taking a dump and no extra battery. But here is a link with some great info and pics. Take care, Painman. <><

As I have done the past few Memorial Days, I worked at my local VA as a way to pay back a bit. I always tell every veteran on intake (During my initial assessment) thank you for their service. On Memorial Day, I make it a point to tell every veteran I have contact with, including each patient I cared for. I told each one how my life would not be as privileged as it has been without their sacrifices.

The most shocked today was the MOD (ED doc) I gave report to, before leaving for the day. I don't think he remembered telling me once he was in Viet Nam. I turned after thanking him, and as I walked away from the speechless man, I heard "Thank you!"

I'm always surprised at how many grizzled vets get choked up.
