According to google, yandex.com appears to originate out of Russia, and is infamously the source for various scams, since they offer a free email service.

I highly doubt our Don would have ever knowingly used a yandex.com email address, but it's possible someone in the contacts has a compromised computer. If so, changing passwords may not effectively eliminate the problem, and additional measures will be necessary.

If Donna is using a Windows system, perhaps someone close by can help her check it out. After changing email account login details, a visit to bleepingcomputer.com may help.

Makes one wonder if maybe Don had passwords in a wallet or something.. I got the scam mail too. Wish now I hadn't deleted it, created a spam email generator account from a spoofed IP addie then unleashed the beast on the bastards.

Nah... it happens to pretty much anyone at some point, damhik... hopefully changing the password will take care of the problem. If it doesn't, then I pity the fool that messes with the Silverbacks (my affectionate nickname for y'all boys here... :wub: ).

I got a similar e-mail from someone on LDRiders mail list a few years ago. It's either a compromised server (web-based e-mail users) or an infection on their local PC. It mines their address book to do what it does. It's a good example of why using different passwords for each place you log in is a good idea; as is changing your PWs every once in a while.

Got a couple of these calls when I took Mom's Vonage line home and she went into a nursing home. I told my "nephew" he belonged in jail and needed to be cell mates with "Big Willy" as BW's you-know-what.

The asshole started calling me every dirty name under the sun--I got to him and laughed at him as I hung up!

A LONG time ago, my dad got a call that my brother was in jail in Mexico. That was almost believable because my brother lived in California and we have relatives in Mexico. My dad called my brother, who didn't answer his dammed phone. So, he called me to see if I knew if Patch was in Mexico. I had just talked to Patch the day before and he was somewhere near home. My dad got ahold of him about 2 hours later and confirmed the call was BS. He got calls like that more than once.

I got a call to inform me my "certified check" was ready, and the caller wanted to confirm my identity prior to sending it to me. So I asked him to read the name on the check, and I'd tell him if it was correct. He became abusive, and demanded I tell him my name, at which point I laughed at him, told him he was in no position to order me about, and that he was full of shit. I hung up while he was still sputtering. Very satisfying!

My mother-in-law got one of those calls, purportedly from her oldest granddaughter, saying she was in Toronto and had her purse stolen with all her money/credit cards/passport, and would she please send money. My M-I-L asked which granddaughter, and the girl danced around that one, so my M-I-L calmly told her she should be calling her mother instead and hung up on her! Of course, she knew all along that neither grand daughter was north of the border, she just wanted to see how far the girl might go to convince her.

With one of the "grandma" callers I made up a name and asked if he was that "nephew". I think I used "Alowishus" and the idiot said "Yeah, this is Alowishus". (facepalm)
