I'm wondering if any of you have experienced the same.

I purchase my new 2008 GL1800 from House of Motorcycles in Vista, CA in December of 2007. I received a very good deal and then told them that I can buy the extended warrant else ware for $495. They said they'd match that price but that my deal was "So good" that they would give me a "signed" side letter authorizing this paid for warrant but would not show it on the "purchase documents." It seemed a bit fishy, but the Sales Manager had been there forever and was a trusted person by many of my contacts who have bought from them before. I figured, OK, I do have their signed document that does state I paid for it. Well you know what comes next.

In mid 2011 I decide that it's time to call Honda to verify my extended warranty. Honda states that it is not available "Your dealer never turned in their paperwork." states Honda Customer Service.

Long story short (too late), that Sales Manager and the Finance person who signed my document (side letter) are no longer there. And, of course, House of Motorcycles in Vista, CA will not honor my claim for the extended warranty policy.

They have offered to split the price for this extended warrant, but I've already paid for it once.

Has anyone else had this problem with a dealer? Has anyone else been stiffed by House of Motorcycles in Vista, CA?

That's a bummer Lanny. No, never had a similar problem or dealt with these folks.

Two things maybe more if I can think of them or make any up.

1) This post should be under "Dealers & Vendor Feedback".

2) I’m no lawyer, but that signed receipt for your extended warranty is a contract, it shows you paid for the extended warranty at that dealer. I don’t think it matters who manages the place or was the finance dude or dudette. They must honor it. If the dealer won’t honor it, go to Mamma-Honda and really bitch. Pay them a personal visit etc, showing them your documents. I believe they are local SoCal.

3) If the dealer and Momma-Honda won’t honor the contract, and you have the time and feel it’s worth it, take the current owner, manager, and finance person to small claims for the $500. Make sure you have all the documentation etc.

I had a similar issue with a contract on the heat pump in my home.

Small claims court is your friend - you have a bill of sale stating you paid for the extended warranty? You are covered . . . by Honda - they were (and are) a Honda dealer, -as such Honda ultimately is responsible for what they sell. It doesn;t matter that the sales manager is no longer there - he WAS in authority when you made your deal and unless their copy of the paperwork doesn;t reflect the same information, you are good to go.

Perhaps they'd also like to say that you really didn't buy the bike?

 
Did you pay cash? You might ask the business if they can produce the accounting records showing you paid for it. The sales manager and finance person may have committed fraud (stolen the money). This may be a police matter. JB

 
Small claims court, pure and simple! They will also end up paying your court costs and time off to go to court. This is a no brainer, just go file it. Or you can contact a local "on air personality, Handel On The Law" he'll tell you the same thing. You do have a csae. :rolleyes:

Lanny - I concur with many things said here. Go back to the dealer, try again. Let them know Momma-Honda is next. Then call Honda talk to them, if need be pay them a visit and have Fairlaner buy you lunch. If that goes south, small claims. Keep all data, very detailed records, correspondences, when you called, who you spoke with, what was said, etc. and take them to small claims asking for lost wages, recoup time, money, etc.

Thanks, FJRB. As manager, financial controls and accountability, at UC Berkeley, this is how my mind works.... :)

 
I bought my ride there new in 2006. Ordered the factory trunk and never got the third lock with the bike. They said they would order me one, still not resolved and still no lock on my trunk. I saw somebody on the forum wanted to give one way, but no luck. Guess I can fork out the $50. I thought they handled it poorly with no resolution.

I was looking for the nekkid violators too.

I just checked that forum and there's still nothing about these cheese eaters. Sounds to me like nobody should be doing business with them. I just posted a link to this thread there. We have some good dealerships around here; no sense doing any business at all with the bad ones.

 
I would also file a complaint with the Attorney Generals office. This sounds very fishy and they may have several complaints. SOunds like a deal was made in good faith on your part and the dealer should make good on it. The AG can help them do the right thing.

Yep!!! I am still around (much to the shugrin of others) and being as abnoxious as I can get away with.

 

No, I haven't purused this yet. Been way too busy with life and work. But, everytime I walk by my wing in the garage... I will do this within the next month and report back. Thanks for the nudge.

Thanks for that link. It needs to be spread to others about this petty BS from a dealership of this size. Or for that matter, a dealership of any size.

 
If you remember, I had an issue with a large service I had done with them, and getting the run-around by service for not done something they said they would (lubing the drive shaft). After multiple poor excuses by the service team why they weren't going to do what they said they would, I went in and asked to speak to the general manager. I explained what was promised, had my evidence, and how I wasn't satisfied. He asked what would satisfy me, and he ordered service to take care of my request. He seemed interested in doing the right thing (and the expense wasn't that much, unlike your situation)

Hopefully, your 'signed' letter is specific. If it is (ie something a small claims judge would clearly follow), and you haven't talked to the General Mgr, then I take your supporting evidence and talk to him. Be polite, but firm. Good Luck.
