Securing a pistol

With recent world events, I'm inclined to carry a firearm whenever possible. However like most people, I travel to places where it is unlawful to carry. While driving, I would keep my pistol in a lock box secured under my seat. But I don't want to drive my car. I want to ride my FJR. I imagine that I can't be the first one to run into this problem and I imagine there are those who have solved it. Is it as simple as putting a lock box in a side case? Has anyone mounted a lock box in their side case? Any other solutions?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I am definitely not looking for your opinions on gun rights or gun control.

Here in PA i have my CCW and on occasion do carry when on the bike. Typically when transporting I'll keep my handgun in my tankbag. This allows access to it in the hopefully unlikely event I need it and when stopped I simply move it to a position on my person. I have a Walther PK380 that fits nicely in an inner pocket on a First Gear Silverstone tank bag and with a map in the outside map pocket doesn't print and is not noticeable. I realize many folks consider a .380 to be on the small side for self defense but the conceal-ability of this gun makes it easy to carry. I recently acquired a S&W .40 that I've yet to try in the tank bag.

I accidentally posted this in the wrong section. Admin, please delete
No, you just didn't bother doing much of a search to see this subject has been covered many, Many, MANY times before on this forum including this NEPRT thread about gun toting on the FJR clear back in 2006.

P.S. I am definitely not looking for your opinions on gun rights or gun control.
Agreed. We all want to keep this thread out of politics.

I believe the real question being asked is where to put the weapon when he is in a locale where carrying a weapon is illegal. When I got my concealed carry permit the trooper teaching the class said "carry" when in/on a vehicle is defined as "within your immediate grasp". So, putting it in a tank bag would probably be considered carrying and therefore illegal in some places. It you have to put the weapon out of your immediate grasp, then why not just put it in your side case or locked top box? I think it is unlikely that someone will break into your side case unless you leave the weapon in the case while the bike is unattended for a significant length of time, which I would not do.

Actually rules are often changing from state to state as is the reciprocity of carry permits from state to state, in our pnw Oregon has no reciprocity and a non-resident carry permit is a challenge to obtain. Google is your friend. I would seek out carry permits and certainly have one in my home state. Also many states have open carry policys and I would see how that would apply to bike riding. On one's person and easy to reach would seem to be the way to go. Training and familiarity are good things also.

drill a small hole in the bottom of your side case and run one end of a small cable around your bike frame and the other end to a lock box inside your side case and have an alarm on your bike.this would be if you had to leave your gun, wallet or any valued small item on your bike

I put velcro on the bottom to keep it from moving around and a rubber grommet around the cable in the hole

There is no place on your person or bike where it is legal to have a gun in all states so are you asking for suggestions on how to carry on the bike where legal in states like Illinois that don't recognize other states CCW or are you asking where to "hide" on the bike in states like New Jersey that don't honor the 2nd amendment?

I carry on my person where legal, lock it in the pannier in states where it isn't and don't visit states that don't allow either.

Transferring from one location to another is difficult. That prohibits me from keeping it in the tank bag and then carrying it with me and vise-versa. People around the cities will actually call the police because they see "a man with a gun". As a result, I wind up carrying on my person while ATTGATT. While this is not the best practice, it's what we gotta do to be compliant.

Unfortunately, this does not solve the OP problem but I would put mine in the side case if I had to. Finally, my top case has seen duty more than the side case. Much easier to transfer covertly as is required here.

If it's legal to have the gun, get a shoulder holster.

A gun locked on your FJR is useless if you actually think you need it.

What are you going to do? Ask the bad guys to let you go get your piece?

Keep it on your person, or forget about it.

The shoulder holster is the best solution, and lucky you .... since you're undoubtedly an ATGATT kinda guy, you'll always have a jacket underwhich the shoulder holster will be concealed.

And don't show it unless you're in the process of using it.

Let me clarify a scenario of what I mean. In my state it is legal to open carry without a permit, and legal to conceal carry with a permit. I have a permit. However, my workplace prohibits me from carrying. I don't want to go to and from work without carrying, especially when I have errands after work. My question is about where to store my pistol when I'm am going to enter a property that I am prohibited from carrying. So far it seems as though whataboutbob has provided the best answer, and is pretty close to what I had in mind. I was hoping someone had an even better solution.

Does anybody know if a S&W Shield will fit in the glove box? I bet a 380 will. Motorcycle
My Springfield Mod 2 9mm with the small mag in it will, but as others have stated, that cover can be pried open easily. Not likely that someone would, but a screwdriver will make quick work of it.

amazon has them for $21.00.comes with cable.this is not fool-proof but if you have an alarm also it's the best I could come up with.I used this as storage while at work.just slipped a j-frame in and out of my pocket into the box.ezpz.It will hold a commander size handgun.google "snapsafe lock box with key lock"

That may well be true in Montana. In Missouri I can leave a loaded gun on the car seat next to me without a permit. In Illinois it has to be unloaded and "in a case" which can be pretty much anything that closes. Both states define "carry" as on my person and require a permit for that.

In other words, its a complex subject with 51 sets of rules counting D.C. and you need to know the rules for the state in which you choose to be armed. The chances of getting caught in violation are slim unless you are really unlucky or stupid but there can be serious consequences should the dice roll against you. Make your own decision.

To the OP: I'd be more concerned about my ability to move it back and forth from bike to body discretely than the actual stowage. Its pretty rare to have a pannier broken into unless the thief has reason to believe it contains something worth the effort (like a firearm he saw you put in it).
