Anyone know how to convert the stock Turn Indicators to a Self Cancelling Turn Indicators for FJR. This is the most expensive bike I have ever owned and the 1st that didn't have them. Since communication of our intentions to the few drivers that might actually see us is critical to our safety, it seems this could be a safety critical item. I hate trying to keep up with them when I should be focused on the road and traffic around me. Perhaps too many years of bikes that did that for me.

I'm no help with your question, but I can honestly say that I have never once wished that I had them. Years ago I just developed the habit to turn them off. I'll also admit that I involuntarily almost always hit the button as I upshift. I guess my thumb got a stern talking to from my subconsious, that checking that damn button was his job. He does so now without even conciously being asked. Just a habit. I think I like it better than depending on some mechanical mechanism to do it. My thumb really takes it to heart as to the consequences of not doing it.

What you want is the:

Kisan Signal Minder here: Clicky

Not sure if SportBike Effects sells them or not but you can get them at CycleGadgets and a few other places.

You might PM Jeff. (BikeEffects) he gives a 10% discount to forum members and is pretty easy to deal with.

It's a programable plug and play modual that turns off your turn signal after so many flashes or seconds. The counter doesn't start until you release the brake light. At least that's how it works on my dad's BMW.

Yup ... pretty much that's how it works BUT I understand you still have to turn them off before you turn them back on. Push it in on the center to reset.

So you are still having to turn them off at some point in time. Why not just remember to turn them off at the first shift.

It is just a habit!

Train yourself to turn them off on the upshift (when turning) or the line-cross (when changing lanes). Habits are learned, repeatable, eventually-unconcious things.

Arguably, It works better on the Beemers because they have the Fukendupen turn signals to begin with. The kind you only push once, and then have a separate button to push to cancel (or hit with your thumb) so they don't have to do the reset thing.

Bottom line though, if you're the type of person that leaves them on, this is a good thing. The signals on the dash on the FJR's, especially the 06's leave a lot to be desired, they are kind of small and not easy to see.

I got a bad case of 'left the signal on' when I got mine and had to retrain myself to cancel with the shift as you said, and now I cancel them all the time even when they aren't on ;)

.... that inevitably, eventually fail now and then.

No one should depend on self-canceling signals, but as a safety net for the few times that eventually even the most well-trained rider screws up, they are a valuable feature and I wish the FJR had them.

Or a crutch for the rider that thinks they're well-trained. Personal choice absolutely, but I'm glad the FJR doesn't have them as standard and would be bothered at the price that they would add as well as that slip away from sport more towards touring.

I don't necessarily want or need the self canceling signals but why Yamaha for '06 went from nice large indicator lights to ones the size of a zit are beyond me. I can't even say it looks better style wise.

On current bikes with the feature, the self-canceling is done in software so the price would be the cost of developing the software distributed over the number of units sold - pennies. And I have no idea why a feature like this makes a motorcycle less sporty.

Next time you are ridin in a group (game show voice of your choosing) It's time to plaayaayaay----You get to wave at the other bikes like Miss America receiving her crown, as gay as possible, since you forgot to cancel your signal. (/game show voice)

And yes, it works.....you find yourself pushing the button just because.......

And if someone repeatedly tries to start their bike with the sidestand down with the look of "why it turns over with no fire" (triumphs, etc) or nothing at all, dude, they are waving all day.....

Wish I had the self cancelling signals. I had them on my old Venture and they worked great. They would cancel after 15 seconds if the bike speed was over 10 mph. You could override and cancel manually at any time by just pressing in the switch like we do now. They always worked perfectly.

Studies have shown that most serious accidents occur when a cage turns left in front of a bike. I'm really surprised and dismayed that Yamaha doesn't see this as a real liability issue and make SC signals std equipment on all their bikes.

I agree with the comments about "brain matter", pay attention, and all that, but I bet there is not one FJR rider out there who hasn't left the signal on inadvertently...and recently. Especially me!

I like have the option of self-canceling turn signals, and I will be putting the Kisan kit on my FJR, but, that said, I've had self-cancelers on my Gold Wing for years...and I never use them! I'm just conditioned to stretch out my thumb and cancel the signal manually after every turn or lane change.

Of course, being from Britain, I signal even when no other vehicles are around...

Good habits are good habits...whether anyone else is around or not. You mean that you don't have the rude, discourteous, self absorbed, cell phone talking, non-signal using pee brains that we have here in the states?

Another feature you will like about your Kisan Signal minder is the ability to turn your turn signals into running lights for more conspicuity. You can set them to at least two levels of brightness I think. I put the kit on my Beemer. It is a set and forget option, the running lights.

I miss the feature on my FJR. Is there any tips on the forum as to where to find the relay replaced by the Kisan?
