I replaced the rear tire yesterday and checked the shaft splines. Thin film of grease, no rust. Ian, Iowa

I got the same model year but less miles. I haven't checked mine, since I haven't had to change the tire yet. Did you buy the bike used? Maybe the previous owner lubed the spline. Was that the first itme you have taken the spline out to check the lubrication?

I did my '04 at about 12k miles. Although there was a little grease, there were also small metal filings in the 'adjacent' grease. :(

I bought the bike used 12/03 with 2500 miles. I never checked with the dealer but assumed the guy did the 5600 mile service. This was the first time I checked the spline. This is the fourth rear tire counting the original. Ian, Iowa

Never "assume" with your splines. Specify that you want them serviced with each tire change if you don't do it yourself. In the long run you'll save a bunch of headaches.

I put on new tires last night (Avons) and did the shaft spline service. Just a little grease on it and there was a little surface rust too. Too little lube in my opinion. I took the additional step of removing the u-joint to clean and lubricate it too. It needed it. It seems Yamaha has a shortage of grease. I used the Honda Moly 60 stuff for shaft splines per recommendations at WC's excellent FJRtech site. I also put a couple drops of light oil on the shifter arm bearing while I was in there.

Mine is a 2005 ABS, 9300 miles, delivered August 2004 for those who keep track of such things.

Where'd you get the Honda Moly 60 paste? The dealers around here never heard of it! Even Honda dealers! lol Oh, and how big are the tubes and price?

I was going by a Honda dealer in Hampton NH, and stopped in. They had it behind the counter, not with the rest of the bottled stuff like oil and cleaners, etc. It comes in a small tube (like mini grease gun size). Maybe 4 oz. ? Probably a lifetime supply for an FJR. I think it cost about $8

My experience is that about 1/3 of Honda dealers stock it. Any should be able to order it for you though. I'm sure other moly pastes work well too, although the Honda stuff is widely used so there is some comfort to that.
