I have always used Motorcycle specific oil in my bikes but through a lot of reading I figured I will try the Shell Rotell T.. 5w-40 oil. Has anyone used this product and for how many miles have you used it......Oh and how is your clutch? Any issues. Thanks

Two pieces of advice:

Do a search and you will find enough information on this topic to write a novel.

fjrpro,

I've used the Rotella Syn-T for the last 20K miles - with no problems. Sub-freezing temps to desert. (29F to 115F)

I purchase the 4 qt jugs at WallyWorld.

And here's an interesting link for when you have absolutely nothing else to do -

Oil info

And yes, you might try a search. ;)

Many have used it around here. It's a popular choice.

I used it for a while, and then went with the cheaper conventional 15W-40 variant. I am not sure why you want to know how many miles? It's also fine for the clutch as it does not have any friction modifiers found in many modern car oils.

Here's something to ponder - I have yet to hear of one single oil related failure or problem with an FJR. Put in whatever your oil of choice is, change it at the suggested intervals, and all will be right in your FJR world.

Dude,

Without a doubt, one of the most intelligent replies I have read here regarding this topic :) see if it sticks.

Plagerism, obvisously.

FJRPRO,

Well back to the topic... I have been using the Shell Rotella T 5/40 Full synthetic for years.. Never had any problems or concerns...

When I had my ZX12R in for valve adjustments the mechanic asked me what type of oil I had been using. He knew of me pretty well(changed many of my rear tires at 1-2000 miles) and knew that I rode my 12 like I was on the track(beat the piss out of her). He was curious because my 12R had almost 16k and he said the insides looked like a "brand new motor!!!!" It should be noted that I change my oil/filter every 3k with synthetic. When I run conventional(Shell 15/40) , I go 2k between oil/filter changes. I use the 3.25 inch purolator pure one filters.

Well.. Didn't want to go there but... Yer right scab I think Pinky Might have "borrowed" this

Rotella T Syn + 4oz of STP Oil Treatment is a very popular mix on this board.

I've used this mix for 14k miles, it's great, and inexpensive.

YMMV - Search is your friend.

I used 15w-40 rotella when I first got my st1300, then tried some 5w-40 syn.

No clutch issues with either.

Did send the 5w-40 to Blackstone labs for oil analysis after about 1500 miles on it. All looked good except for one thing, it had sheared down to about a 5w-32... This was my estimate from what information Blackstone returns, had to find a comparison of some numbers on the net.

But I think they all shear down. I didn't test any other oils I used, eventually ended up using amsoil motorcycle specific. It gets a little expensive per oil change when u add in the analysis expense

regards,

Hey Noob,
What other oil(s) have you compared(sent in to labs) to this??

WW
Webby, that's what I was saying, just the rotella synth. It would make for expensive oil changes to test ea one, kinda defeating the purpose of going with an oil that was less expensive in the first place.

But if you look at Amsoils site, the new MCF oil is (supposedly) specially formulated to avoid shearing. They go to great lengths describing it's capabilities. Locally I could get the amsoil for 7 a quart and I figured if I went 5k per change (still 3k less the mfg recommends), and didn't do oil analysis (because this one is motorcycle specific and wouldn't be concerned as much), came out about even.

For the record, I noticed no difference in shifting or anything else when going from rotella 5w-40 to Ams MCF 10w-40.

my .02 anywho. Regards,
