I dropped mine at the shop yesterday for the following: (06 w/34,000 miles)

Change tires. (which I provided. Angel ST's.)

Check brakes. Replace pads if needed. (never done before)

Bleed the clutch and brake fluids. (never done before)

Change out anti-freeze.(never done before)

Check valves. Adjust if necessary.(never done before)

Worst case, my bill will be $1200 bucks.
Just wanted to chime in real quick to say the dealer found that the valves were still within spec. No adjustments were made.

Thanks to this forum...I feel comfortable that I could do the first 4 items...and if I watched someone doing #5...could do the 5th. This board has saved me big $$ over the years.

When I got my first '04 in October of '03...I wouldn't touch my bike's maintenance...had a maintenance agreement $500/year labor and routine parts - not tires. With the help of this board and local FJR riders offering their help...I have benefitted greatly...besides meeting a great bunch of people who will do most anything to help you.

I think your mechanic gave you a good honest price, but I could do everything listed other than changing the tires mentioned in about 1.5 hours. The throttle body sync is very simple given you have a phillips screw driver and a $40 mercury sync tool. Plugs on this bike take about 20-25 minutes to do, and a brake fluid flush could probably take an hour to get everything done right I guess.

Don't get me wrong it is awesome that you support his good work, just saying that as I read around the forum here, I realized how easy most things on this bike are to do. The fact that the gas tank is hinged and swings back by removing the top two bolts makes syncing and plug changes an easy process. In case you lose the good mechanic hook-up and don't want to go to a stealership, check back here with any questions you may have, and enjoy the ride! ;)
