Shifting from 5 to 1 is down shifting.

Er, shifting from 5 to 1 is known as 'grenading' your tranny/motor. Best to visit 4, 3 and 2 on they way to 1. ;)
That's the way all the Harley riders do it, They pull in the clutch, coast to a stop and then put it in first. :D

I actually heard a Harley rider recommend this to a new rider on a sport bike who was having problems grasping downshifting.  :dntknw: :fie: :fool:

....just finished a class in Kalifornia. They told him to perform engine braking....
Try to disabuse your friend of the concept of engine braking altogether. Nothing beats brakes for braking. It is important to downshift in order to be in the proper gear for accelerating, tho. Sometimes classes can't be taken too literally, too bad; perfection is a rare commodity; "trust but verify".

Just curious what the consensus opinion is...
If you're shifting through the gears from 5th to 1st, do you tell people you're upshifting or downshifting?
Depends on if I'm using street pattern or GP pattern...

:derisive:

You can do it anyway you want. One thing for sure though, brakes are alot cheaper than transmissions and eaiser to repair. Don't like to down shift unless really neccessary. My .02. PM. <>< :D

When you're in a high rise building on the 5th floor and want to go to the 1st floor, you're going down.

Same as the gear pattern on the bike!

He said "going down" :D Hey now!!!

Along the same lines of questioning, is it necessarily a high rise just because it has 5 floors of parking? :p
