Just sold my '04 FJR with 72,200 miles on it..been running Rotella 15-40 in it..damn thing shifted very smoothly. Got the '08, still breaking it in, and the 3rd to 4th gear shift is a *****. Hope after I change the break in oil and put in some Rotella it shifts as smooth as the '04 did.
That's ironic, didn't they change the fourth gear on the '08's to improve that shift?

Ironic is exactly what NEPRT is all about....We spot a dead horse, then all dance around the Carcass, kicking the **** out of it.

BTW, my YamaLube still kicks your Oil's ***!

Because, there's no scientific test (given) to prove it one way or the other.
True, no test that I know of. But the point was that there is a difference in oils. And there are tests for that. It just doesn't seem like a fantasy stretch to believe that certain mechanical conditions would perform better with one versus another. While I can agree that any brand of oil that meets the correct specifications will work and not damage your engine, I can also buy into the idea that any particular engine may/may not perform better with a specific one.

Modern multi-viscosity oils obviate the necessity for this.... :)
Only to a point. Yammy recommends 20w40 for my bike only down to about 45 degrees F. Colder than that, Yammy says 10w30. (FZ-6) Of course, Yammy only recommends Yamalube. :glare:

It's funny, really. We all have ideas and prejudices about oil. (Thus, NEPRT) For example, the oil change interval as recommended by Yammy on my FZ is 8,000 miles! And the little ******* only holds 3 quarts! And it will turn 14,000 RPMs!

Now, I just can't sleep at night following that. I just can't make myself do it. My FZ has just under 16K on it now and it has had the oil/filter changed NINE times. No science, but I feel better.

I changed from dino oil to Rotella 5w-40 synthetic last week as per recommendation of this forum [with skepticism]- shifting action is much better. Not the actual gearchange itself but rather clutch action- engagement and release is much smoother. Some older bikes have dry clutch plate, disc problems. I keep the oil level just over the top of the window and hold the clutch in at lights in gear[should anyhow, I got bumped in the *** last week at a light]- mayhaps this keeps the plates lubed better?

I'll start saving it for you. Usually, I use it to fuel bon fires.

Shipping is on you, though. ;)
