Got the hard copy of a magazine today (published by the Naval Safety Center) and couldn't resist posting a link to an article contained within it.

While I appreciate their desire to push motorcycle safety, IMO they fell short with a couple of the "one-liners" in this article.

One of my favorites:

...was completely protected from road-rash injury by personal protective equipment: light-colored long-sleeve shirt and pants, boots, leather gloves, DoT-approved helmet, and goggles.
Good thing that t-shirt was there. Musta been one of dem new Kevlar t-shirts.

That's the article - in my email back to the editor I mentioned the "light-colored" comment and said I'd sure like someone to explain the benefits of light colors. Maybe this guy's onto something!

What worse, the author is a Navy CAPT and head of one of the safety divisions. He's the one so proud of wearing a, "DoT approved helmet." I immediately knew that meant - little teeny weeny helmet - check out the picture! I do have to give it to him however, later in the article he did say his shirt was made of a canvas like material. Oh yeah, his only injury was an "impact" injury to his shoulder -- ya think maybe "real" PPE with "armor" in the shoulders might have helped??

The only guy who was wearing effective PPE was the BMW rider.
And did you see the end of the article...he replaced his BMW R1150R w/ a 2007 FJR.

:good:

I'll tell you what that's all about...

Recently the policy of wearing long sleeves and a reflective safety vest while riding aboard a DoD installation (and all other times for active duty personnel) was modified. Now, except during periods of limited visibility, you're allowed to wear a "...brightly colored outer upper garment having full length sleeves..." in lieu of a reflective vest. That's actually pretty nice for those of us that wear a bright jacket all the time.

Same jacket I wear - I hate seeing warmer weather arrive! I may get the mesh neon yellow jacket - my change jar is almost full!
