I shipped a bike in June using a branch of Allied Van Lines. Bike was picked up at my home and shipped to Albany NY to the buyer. It arrived in great shape after about a week and a half. Typically they pick the bike up and palletize it in a local truck that takes it to a warehouse. At the warehouse it is combined with other freight and shipped in a full truck to the terminal destination. If you want home delivery, it will be transferred to a local truck with a lift-gate and brought to you.
Shipping is expensive, and no fun. It gets the job done. Take a look at the weather, and understand it always looks worse than it is. If you have good gear, it should be no problem. If you have electric gear, it is easy to get access to the battery to install the harness before you leave the showroom. The only thing that should stop you is snow and ice.
