The engine on my old Yamaha XS750 ate a valve a few weeks back, and my brother in Ontario found a really good replacement engine (which is now sitting in his garage), and I need to get it out to Calgary.

Anyone shipped BIG parts within Canada (about 200+ lbs, incl. crate/pallet) ? Which carrier did you use? Recommendations? Suggestions?

I went to uShip.com, and the quotes so far have been absolutely ridiculous (lowest quote so far is somewhere north of $3K... for a $400 engine!), and all the quotes (so far) seem to be from "some guy with a pickup truck" - I'll pass, thanks!

TIA for any assistance

I have nothing Griff, but wish you the best of luck. My fjr engine came UPS freight... No such thing as UPS freight in your hood?

Looking into a number of LTL carriers, and have inquiries into both CN and CP for depot to depot delivery... this can't be all that difficult.

Greyhound has max weight and this is over... will look into UPS freight, not sure it does exist on this side of the 49th... I know that most of the other courier/delivery companies have weight limits that the engine will exceed.

Thanks folks!

A very good friend of mine is moving back out to Calgary in 2 weeks. He's a big time bike guy (instructor, racer) I'll mention it to him and see if he's willing/has room.
That would be great... where is he located, as the engine is currently in Ingersoll ON (near London).

Update:

UPS freight... only delivers point to point in the States, or US to Canada... not point to point here

Greyhound... too big

CN and CP have yet to answer/return my calls

Checked with one of the cross-sountry moving companies, they have a 500 lb minimum which makes it cost-prohibitive

Canadian Freightways/Kingsway sounds like they MIGHT be able to take it. Still waiting for a definitive answer and a price.

Who knew it would be so friggin' hard to ship a 200 lb lump of metal?

Griff,

I talked to my buddy tonight and he has room and is willing to haul it out to Calgary along with his stuff. The trick will be to get it from London to here.

Pickup truck or small car trailer?
If it comes to that, I'll drive out to Ontario after the riding season and pick it up myself. Long way to go, lotta time and $$ though...

I'll investigate getting it to Sudbury tomorrow. Thanks Steve!
